This is probably such a basic question but I've not encountered it before....

If you play well for 17 holes but, due to an unexpected lost ball right next to the 18th green and not wanting to walk back, you NR.........I thought you still could get a handicap cut (net double for that hole)

Is that wrong??

you are correct. Handicap is worked out using stableford points

You can get cut. I was cut once for almost exactly that.

You can't win a medal but you could still win a stableford and/or get cut.

My first cut came off the back of a N/R.

In fact, as I'm prone to a few blow up holes, I tend to play medal rounds with a stableford mentality. Stops me caring when I have a 10 on the card :D

I try not to N/R though, as I reckon it's habitual.

Nothing wrong with NRing a hole in a medal and playing the round out. Just because the medal score is gone doesn't mean you can't buffer or even get a cut.

I had a poor round last week, shotgun start off the 5th tee. I'd amassed a grand total of 18 points by the time I got to the 1st tee.

Then went on to par the next 3 holes (2nd is SI 2 - so a fair achievement) and took my points total up to 29.

Probably the only time in my life I'll par the first 3 at Willow Valley, and go on to get .1 added to my handicap.

Well am I glad I read this, played in a medal today and a PP shot a 71, usual card is 72. However he had a stinker on a couple of holes, six on a par three and seven on a par four. Plays off 15. I told him he could have a decent hcap reduction but he was adamant he would not.
cannot wait till the scores go in and see what he gets cut.

Not sure how this works for Cat1...which is where you sit. Best ask...

Doesn't matter what the HC is

All HC reductions are worked out on Stableford adjustment- I have been cut .2 before on an NR

Interesting

Wish this was made clear as I never knew this. Have often given up on my score when had an early NR due to lost ball and a high score on a hole.

If you NR on a hole in a medal, CONGU states that your scores should continue to be recorded.

So what do you write on the card? Just nr next to the 18th and total the rest up in the total box?
I would put NR on the 18th and NR as the total and for the back nine. Just makes it obvious to the person collecting the cards rather than them trying to figure out why there is a blank space or whatever

On the opposite side of the coin. A few years ago at RAGC I was playing with a guy who NR'd with 5 holes to play. He played them out and while I wasn't marking his card so didn't know his exact score I know that he didn't hole out on all of them.

When the results were published I noticed that his last 5 holes were all recorded as pars and he scraped into the buffer.

I suspect this was due to either he, his marker or both not understanding that your handicap is still adjusted following an NR
