I am playing one of my last few rounds of golf tomorrow before I leave my club.

I am thinking about playing with an 11 club 60+ year old set handed down from my wifes great grandfather. I also am planning to use some old small balls from in the bag too, they are worn a bit (think a Pro V1 hit by John Daly off a beer can for every full shot for 72 holes of a tour event).

Grips are pretty worn but useable, some have been redone (sadly) with 60s/70 grips and shafts. The woods are ancient wooden headed things, the putter is a Benny and the highest loft is a mashie niblick!

If you vote for me to play 18 with the old clubs what do you expect me to score? (No prizes for the winner exept pride)

BACK on topic it looks like you guys are making my mind up for me, I was in too minds about what to do tomorrow so I thought I should seek council from the forum

SB - it will be raining and you wont be able to hold the grips, the very thin bladed irons will thin every shot off teh wet ground, the benny putter will twist every which way and smoe miserable git will want to disqualify you for playing with an illegal ball.

But who cares - tell evryone what you are doing and why.

My guess - playing off 11 or 12, you will shoot something like 22 over

Hope the weather holds for you

Where are you moving to - smoewhere cold and windy in Scotland wasn't it ? Take the clubs - they would be shocked by teh modern improvements in technology up there ;)

Was that intentional? ;)

Is it out of sentiment or curiosity that you want to play with the old equipment?

If it were out of sentiment I wouldn't dare for fear of something snapping!
Also, are the old small balls still legal?

If you do play with them, I don't think you'll break 90.

Even money 100+

Go for the retro club route, it will be an experience and will make sure you leave South Winchester with an distinct memory, otherwise it will be just another round.

In a few years time the members may still be talking about the mad scientist that played with his grandads' clubs. (or maybe not!)

either way cut him some slack, he's scientist not a linguist !

(score 104, is there a prize?)

More interested in why you are leaving your club and where will you move to?

I tried some 1980's or before blades in January, the sweet spot is soo small that you will probably only hit 1 in 10 shots well. So, if you go down the old club route, be prepared to lay up more often :)

I'd give the old gear a try. I would like to see the mag do something like this - maybe a fourball with gear from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.

I think there is a place where you can hire or play with hickory shafted clubs and gutta percha balls, plus all the old clothing.

Hope the mashie-niblick performs for you. :D
