Not knowing the very basics of rules in comps.

No need for me to play 2 balls as I was 100% confident in my knowledge of the rules in this instance.

As has been said on many a time on this forum the other player is not a referee and he was not even my marker.

If you are confident in the rules then just carry on

Been challenged before about using my towel to clear leaves from the green - just simply asked them to show me which rule I was breaking

I understand your point but I ma sure we've all been with people that are certain they are correct. You think differently and I have played two balls and marked two scores simply to keep a level of civility in the group and fot the benefit of the other playing partners not involved.

Why can’t we allow players the trust for them to learn the rules in their own way

Anytime I have played and someone is unsure they just ask their fellow playing companions and then if no one knows will look it up
That's incredibly naive. The world is full of golfers who are confident about some rules that they learned from other golfers who confidently explained what the rules were - and were wrong. And then those erroneous beliefs get passed along to the next generation.

We call that the (insert golf club name here) whispers.

I had this just a couple of weeks ago (I refused to take relief that he was offering me) - I asked him to show me where the rule to take that relief was, and he said that so-and-so had told him what to do the last time the ruling came up and that I was wrong saying otherwise.

He said he'd find the ruling and show me, but he hasn't spoken to me since for some reason...

Just for kicks...

To everyone that's in favour of the concept/theory of us needing to pass rules level 1, I assume you've all done it already ? 😉
Yes.

When IanM posted the link on here a few years I put it out to my golf mates WhatsApp group. Most did it and found it interesting and it was a bit competitive as to who could get the highest score.

Subsequently I have also done and passed Level 2.

I haven't but would be happy to. So went to take a look and noted with interest that you have to register with the R&A in order to do the test.

That means the R&A knows the email address of anyone who fails the test. That fact could be passed on to England Golf, who could then suspend their handicap pending a retake. It's an idea ...🤔

Big brother is watching

Took the test a while back

Maybe we should get all the pros to take them and if they fail they lose their tour card 🤔

If you take it please tell us what you thought of it and whether getting players to do it would be a good idea or not.

Not sure which quiz you are referring to but the R&A site has 3 levels, all with 6, 9 or 18 questions that you can take without registering

Yes I have.

The people who cry so much about the WHS should make more noise about the rules being followed sits a much bigger problem than a few hooky handicaps.

Personally I don't see rules not being followed in competitive golf locally. If there is a problem in one area it was no reason to introduce an easier form of cheating in another.

there is a simple test on the R&A app is there not with no need to register

I've done those; not the same as the Academy test. Scored 9/9 on the advanced (but only 8/9 on the intermediate 🥴). And I thought some of the questions were of dubious value. For example, the beginner one asked whether someone else you're playing with is a "partner". Does it really matter? Shouldn't the quiz focus on things that affect whether you're playing to the rules?
