No match thread??

What is to defend? England are not very good and support for the national team and Premiership football in general is declining.

That said, quite pathetic that some of you seem to take more pleasure from an England loss than a Scotland win? The opposite isn't the case. I almost always want Scotland to win and the same goes for all the home nations.

I appreciate that this is a light hearted post poking fun at the English but it hints at a deeper seated malaise and I find that a shame and quite poor really.

It's called local rivalry, man up and take the stick when it's flying :ears:

Same as Arsenal/Spurs, Liverpool/Everton, United/City etc, fans giving each other grief after results go for and against their respective teams.

And if Ingurlund had won would you have came on the inevitable thread that would have been posted containing no end of anti-German, Fawlty Towers-esque style of humour complaining that it was really a thinly disguised rascist attack on the Germans?

No! Didn't think so.

spot on...........

I'm finding this malaise running through the whole forum...........the same posters.......surely not!

If Scotland lose though you rarely get an Englishman starting up a thread about it if ever. The thing is that we look at our own team more than somebody elses. I get absolutely no pleasure if Scotland Win, Lose or Draw. Until this morning I did not know they were even playing. Never understood it and never will why they pay so much attention to our results and performances

I can take or leave England as a team, I have no real interest in their results or performances and focus on my own Country.
But what you post is, for the most part, is the root of the problem IMHO. It's hardly surprising that you didn't know Scotland were playing last night. All I have heard on the "national" sports programmes on TV and Radio is who is playing where for England and the friendly match being billed and described consistently as the big one, this despite several WCQ games happening that actually meant something.
I listened to Talksport (a National broadcast) yesterday morning on the way to work and then for a while in the office. In a 3 hour space I heard nearly 2 hours of talk on England and how they would shape-up against Germany, what their chances were (quite high according to the presenters and the callers) and in that 3 hours, Scotland were mentioned twice... as passing comments.

I have heard great humility coming from a vast majority of true England fans the last few years, almost an acceptance that they are not really as good as they used to be and that other countries have moved away from them. It just seems that someone needs to tell the "national" media this as well, it's this that leads to many Scots, Welsh and NI folks* to feel a bit gleeful when England lose.

* I do not wish to speak for these peoples and it is not intended to come across that way. It is my opinion only - other opinions are readily available.

As an Englishman can I poke some light hearted fun at the England team?;)

As for the football rivalry then I do find it sad when a supporter of one team tries to prove how much they love their team by expressing their hatred of a rival. But this is quite the norm in football and is nothing new.

I think you summed it up yourself pretty well.

It's the media; I can easily believe you didn't know Scotland were playing but I wouldn't believe anyone living in Scotland (with even a passing interest in sport) who claimed they didn't know England were playing. We're subjected to all the same hype and jingoism that they serve up for you lot, the same biased commentary. Any gentle ribbing in the aftermath of an embarrassing defeat is only a reaction to that.

I don't understand these threads. I am happy to have some banter over football with anyone, but as soon as an English man or women makes a comment all you get is biting or hooked comments. I suppose it is humour to some, but rather repetitive to others.

Good to see Scotland doing so well in friendlies though. they might be able to get a game with Gibraltar when the World Cup is on.;)

I listened to talk Sport properly for the first time last weekend when I was doing some painting. And I was genuinely shocked by the nationalism, even getting worryingly close to casual racism, and of the arrogant attitude of the presenter and contributors regarding the English team and the English game.

And as for the callers, jeez, it was like the letters page of the Daily Mail, caller after caller bemoaning the fact that players are paid too much, it's all the agents fault, this didn't happen in the olden days and we won the world cup, you should make the players earn £100 a week until they are in the first team blah blah blah. One caller came on to say that you don't really need to increase the number of coaches in the British game as all they will do is try and make players 'play this foreign possession football' instead of doing what England does best, high ball to the forward with lots of running about. Like 'world class' players (apparently) such as Steven Gerrard do.

It was truly frightening and was if they were in a time warp. This presenter and contributor (some bitter ex pro who was plainly jealous that he had not earned much money in the game) then agreed with this garbage. None of them took a minute to realise that just about all of the ills allegedly effecting the English game were actually true across the whole of the world, and other countries with the same situation seem to manage OK. It was painted as if young Spanish and German players earn tuppence ha'penny a week and spend all week cleaning the first teams boots until they are 21.

It made 6-0-6 seem like Question Time. Never again.

It is not though is it. It is a veneer of unfunny ribbing disguising a nasty undercurrent of anti-English sentiment. I don't particularly care about it, I just find it quite sad...

Anyway, I was in Scotland last week for 4 days: Glasgow, Prestwick and Kirkcaldy. It was good for work and I had some great dinners out. Particularly at Elliotts in Prestwick - very nice.

It wasn't all good though as 90% of the women I saw were FAT! Not ugly really but man, they didn't miss many meals between them. Not quite obese either, just big units - enough lard to put you off! And there was me thinking of all the pretty lassies that Robbie Burns wrote about?! Maybe it used to be the case in Scotland but not anymore. Fat as butter, most of them!

I was just glad to get back to Sussex and be reminded of how lovely girls can be.

No offence intended by the way, just a bit of friendly local rivalry.......

I suspect that the different attitudes are as a result of Scottish folk majoring on their National team, which, in the case of many Celtic supporters, appears to be RoI.

In the main English football supporters seem far more interested in their Club side than the continual struggle and ineptitude of the National team.

Not surprising really when considering relative population sizes and, thus, attendance levels at League matches either side of the border (again excluding Celtic & Rangers).

So this is why I'm a Celebrity was not on!! I ended up catching up on Masterchef...
