Been bothering me for a while this.

When your partner(s) say to you "nice shot" or "well holed", what is the correct response to avoid coming off douchey?

I ask because most players seem to say nothing when I say it to them and it doesn't bother me.

So is saying a quite "thanks" worse than saying nothing?

Is ignoring the praise rude, or acknowledging it arrogant? :D

When it happens and tbh not often at the moment I just say thanks whilst doing what I was doing. Nowt wrong in it, some fellas I play with are always at it.

I normally say thanks.

What does annoy me is people who say "well holed" or "Yes" or something similar before the putt has dropped, meaning it will invariably catch the lip and do a 360. I have asked my matchplay partner to stop doing it. I know it's all in the mind but it gets me.

I would say a quite thanks as I usually do. I certainly wouldn't ignore anyone.

Just dont do a fist-Pump! :D

My advice would be to watch a shot carefully before offering any compliments.

Quite often partners say great shot just before it misses the hole or misses a green or fairway. Really annoying when someone says good shot and you know it's going to be in a crap spot a second later or you know you've missed the sweet spot by a mile.

It feels patronising if a partner keeps saying good shot for what you would consider a strictly average effort.

You need to gauge or know someones ability well before offering too much praise. I restrict my praise to others to genuinely very good shots, not average ones. All we say up here is 'shot'. Most folks say thanks.

I think it shows arrogance and rudeness if you dont reply. I always say thanks or cheers if someone compliments me.

I know what you mean Wild, I used to play with a chap in my old society that would say great strike as soon as the club face touched the ball and great putt as soon as your putter touched the ball....the final straw came when he started calling everyone 'love'.

Stood on the 1st tee one morning, I sliced my opening tee shot OOB only to hear 'great strike love' as soon as i'd touched the ball, I totally lost it with him and warned him if he spoke to me once more i'd kick his teeth in

I'm not proud...its not big & its not clever! lol

My normal comment would be 'it was a bit off the bottom edge', or 'nah, it was a bit toey'. I very rarely hit a really good shot, so most guys who know me don't bother with the compliments. They kind of know by now I am never happy.

A quite 'thanks' is the best answer really.

Worst answer is a technical account of how it was played 'I knew it was a slight draw, as the wind was 5 points off the north, so I went for a 3/4 swing with a choked down 5i, tee'd marginaly forwards with a strong grip, then took it back inside, with .....'

I didn't want a lecture, I only said 'shot'.

It depends. When I do hit a really good one I always say cheers in response to the "good shot".

If it is just a normal strike I don't bother.

I don't really expect thanks for when I say good shot to someone else.

The worst thing I've found is when people say a shot was a good one when it isn't.
One of my playing partners will say a shot was good and when you point out that it went into the trees he just responds with "well it was a good strike, just pushed a bit!"
Drives me mad

Guy we were playing with yesterday hit a massive duck hook off the tee with his driver.
I tried to offer my condolences by saying "well you did have a [****] lie"

He didn't see the funny side
