I know this is a bit early, but we have a lot of holidays planned during peak playing times, May to end Sept. I'm thinking of not joining full membership, but finding a points system somewhere for a year. Am I being selfish?

You have to do what is right for yourself. You are not responsible for your current club on your own. Golf subs are not cheap, you can not just throw money away if you are not getting to use the facility.

Have you thought about talking to the club, see if they can offer you a deal for next year?

I guess there’s no (worthwhile) longer term benefits of having continuous membership, membership waiting list, important comp entry or fees to re-join the following year that would mean you can’t benefit from a ‘gap’ year if you’re gonna have limited rounds next year

If not then go for it, especially if there’s a points based ‘membership’ you can use instead or even access via member/guest etc

No, but I will now

No you are not being selfish.
It’s a transaction and you’re the customer.
If you wanted to shop at a different supermarket would you feel loyalty towards your current supermarket?

I do understand a lot of members use the golf club as their social hub so if you do go up just for a beer or a meal or catch up with friends then maybe worth seeing if they do a social membership.

Other than that use the subs to pay for other things you enjoy doing. The golf club will still be there if and when you get back to it.

P.S not sure you can be Competition Secretary if you are not a member though

Rumour at our club is subs are going up £150 to £1250. We have a waiting list at the moment so I can see lots of new members next year

I’m a little confused by the question. Purely because selfish is exactly what you should be, your money, your choice and your right to do what makes you happy and keeps pounds in your pocket if you’re not going to be getting what is VFM for you.

First thing though is speak with the club see if they can do some kind of deal or pause in your membership or subs if you’re not using it for a prolonged period. Secondly if there’s no waiting list or rejoining fee (I can’t stand joining fees or at least exorbitant ones that provide no benefit to the person paying it!) then what is really to stop you taking a sabbatical and a bit of time away from your club and going back the year after.

Plus you can pay £40 to England golf to maintain your handicap through iPlay and have an accurate record when or if you rejoin.

Join Orchardleigh GC in Somerset. They have a membership deal for £1 and they will give you an official handicap so you are then free to play anywhere you like.

I've seen a few on here that mention they're duty to bound to keep putting money into a club. Never understood it myself, they wouldn't be paying my gas bill if I was struggling.

I think for most people - especially those that work full time - a full membership of a golf club probably isn't value for money in terms of how much it costs per round, the premium I pay to be a member is so I can have access to the course when I want, play in comps, and for the social aspect as well.

I am actually going to give a flexi membership a try next year alongside my current membership - Dewsbury does the flexi option for just over £500 and it's right on my doorstep so I'll use it to see if I'd get far more vfm from having a course that is 2 minutes away.

I've also considered joining Huddersfield which is the lads home club - big joining fee, expensive subs but it's playable pretty much all year round and in excellent condition regardless of the season - plus you get excellent practice facilities and free range balls - so when you break the costs down, factoring course playability etc, pound for pound it won't be far off what I'm paying now.

I'd always want to have some sort of membership though - I wouldn't play a fraction of the golf I do trying to arrange social golf with mates.

This…especially bits in bold. But each to their own with their golf and membership…it’s personal.

If I did not consider being a member of a club as part of who I am…and bits in bold are me and my place, then I’d think about what I should do. We’ve spent a lot of time away from home this year and it’ll likely be same next. But I consider my subs as a sunk cost of living item a bit like council tax (doesn’t much matter how much I’m not in the house, we have to pay it), and so I happily continue my membership. That I can afford to do so I consider myself very fortunate in that respect.

I've been thinking about this the last couple of years, if I was paying a green fee every time I played I'd 'never' play, especially where I play at 340zl (£70) for a Saturday green fee, which is a ridiculous amount for the standard of the course.

But my annual subs are 4,700zl (£940) so it only takes 14 rounds to justify paying annually.
