Based on what thinking Homer? Bjorn has played almost all his golf in Europe whereas Clarke played for a spell on the US tour when he was at the top end of the WR.

What's your thinking, Val? Are the Americans fired up by recent defeats and finally ready to get it right? Or just that they're "due" one? Or better up and coming players?

It does make me laugh a bit as it's as if they are appointing a new pope. Not someone who for 3 days has to manage a bunch of highly motivated and competent golfers to beat a bunch of highly competent but not very motivated golfers from what I saw.

Based on what thinking Homer? Bjorn has played almost all his golf in Europe whereas Clarke played for a spell on the US tour when he was at the top end of the WR.

Basically Bjorn has been around the team room as VC more often and Clarke was a Sky Pundit this time around. I know Clarke played in the US but wasn't Bjorn part of the back room staff at Medinah and so will know what it takes to win over there. I think the US team will be very strong and very motivated to avoid another defeat and so I think whoever gets the job will have a tough time as I think we'll get beaten

Probably a bit of all that, they have the players and talent, they just need a bit of belief and luck IMO, they should have had it last time in US so they'll be hurting still plus the Phil/Tom fallout from this one

And all he has to do is get them playing well for just 3 days. Name me one other managers role in any major sport or sporting contest that has that choice and such a limited period they need to perform in? So how difficult can it really be?

Fair play to McGinley and the European tour as they seem to have got the right formula and all that, but come on, when you have 3 out of the worlds top 5 or whatever Europe had, do you really need some tactical insightful genius? Or in reality could most of the posters on here have got much the same result if they were captain?

apart from interviews, opening and closing speeches etc but he could do a practice range warm up session with the team which most couldnt keep up with.

On the other hand it is high profile, high pressure - afterwards you are either regarded as a mythical yoda or a total numpty depending on how your batch of superstars performs.

It does not take some kind of genius to realise that Woods and Mickleson would not play well together, again most posters on here could have worked that one out. And I'm not sure that the US ever had the majority of the best players in recent times if you take Woods out of it, who never performs well in Ryder Cups anyway,as his heart is obviously not really in it. The Europeans had plenty of major winners to call on in the past.

And almost every other major sporting tournament lasts way longer than 3 days where players can lose form, get injured, come up against different formations, have to adjust their tactics mid match etc etc. You don't even have to think about what your opponent will do or what tactics they will use or how they will play in a Ryder Cup as you don't know who it will be. How easy does that make it!

And as for the player permutations then I'm sure most posters on here can pretty much tell you what the major pairings will be for the next European Ryder Cup team now as they will be very similar to the ones used this year. Apart from Poulter who will be a vice captain.

Going to be Clarke or Bjorn. I can see Bjorn getting it tbh. He's been chairman of the European Tour Tournament Committee, so he's well regarded by the European Tour, and seems well respected on Tour. He'd do an excellent job.
