Newbie saying hello from Leicester

I'd be happy to mark a card for you but at the moment my golf is limited to the Winter League most weekends. Parring 9 to 15 is a good run (especially 13 and 15) and if you can reproduce that sort of form on one of your three cards your initial handicap should easily be below 18.

There are a few decent courses in the area although Leicestershire is pretty poor when it comes to really good courses, Hinckley has had a bit of work done recently and is one of my favourite Leicestershire courses.

A good way to play local courses if your working hours allow is to join either the B or C Team, you'll then get home and away matches at excellent value, matches are generally friendly affairs and played as 4BBB matchplay.

Thanks crow, definitely going to try and be there on the 1st, it would be nice to play a round with new faces rather than alone. I did swap numbers with one of the lads I joined up with yesterday too, he also didn't have a handicap and and needs to get a few rounds in to get a handicap too. All about getting in the practice before spring now!

With regards to joining the teams; is it just a case of asking in the pro shop? I actually thought people were picked for the teams rather than asking to join, there was never any junior teams so I never got the chance before.

Put your name down on the on-line booking sheet if you want to join us on the 1st, I assume that you've been shown how to use this?

Re the B & C Teams, you do need to be picked to play in each match but the teams are often struggling for players so if you just introduce yourself to the Captains (I know both so can help you there) and if you're available for a lot of the matches you should get a few games, but this can't be guaranteed.

Yeah that makes sense, need to get a handicap sorted first though!
I haven't been shown how to use it but I'll have a look now, I have my number and password so I should be able to figure it out.

I'm an ex Ullesthorpe member. I left many years ago as I found winter golf there, or more specifically wet weather golf, a real slog. I don't know if it's improved in that respect, but it's certainly one of the friendlier clubs in Leicestershire which, as Crow rightly says, is not a county renowned for good courses. They're all rather ordinary.

Enjoy the forum and being back at Ullesthorpe, Dan. Wet course, but love the atmosphere of the place and often go for a game if I'm down that way as I have friends in the village.

It still struggles after heavy rain as far as I know, there is more drainage now compared to when I used to play so it does seem like they're making an effort but it has been closed for a day or two over Xmas too. I played today and the course was fine though, a few holes that were on temporary greens on the 28th were onto the main greens which was a good sign.

I bet the 9th was sodden. Worst place on the course for retaining water. Is it open today? Most around here are closed.

Well we got 18 holes in and the course wasn't too bad considering the rain we've had, a few soft areas and mostly temporary greens but nice to be out.

Good to meet Dan for the first time and I'm sure your handicap will fall rapidly once you tame that swing; think Nick Price's tempo but much faster!
Hope you enjoyed it too Rob, and that the ladies were kind to you. ;)

The company was worth the visit, my golf not so. I think I managed 4 pars from 18 holes.

I was warned of the consequences of not passing the ladies tee on the first, and thankfully I got around intact.

Many thanks to all involved

cheers guys, had a great time too, some highlights in there im sure. really enjoyable round although i currently have an 2 ice packs on my neck and shoulder, a day off is needed i think!
