Hi Guys,
I had some great advice from this forum in the past when I was looking for a decent forgiving set of Irons. I purchased some callaway x-14's and love them. Im a 24 handicap golfer and this year im hoping to get down to around the 20 mark.

Im struggling at the moment with my driving. I only have 1 wood which is a very cheap Donnay driver which cost around £10 from sportsdirect. I know, its pants.
So, looking to build on my clubs ive decided to try a decent ish set of woods.

Ive purchased a callaway steelhead iii 3 & 5 wood in mint condition for £50 for the two.
They have been delivered today and are sitting in the box behind me. Im going to the range tonight as i cant wait to try them out.

Does anyone have any experiance of these woods?
I know they date from around 2003/4 i think. Im not after monster drives, id just like to be able to constantly hit the fairway off the tee box rather than ending up in the trees!

Thanks in advance!

I have the steelhead 4+, had it about 10 years and its long and accurate, beautiful sound at strike

Bargain!!!!

I have the Steelhead III 4 and 7 woods, Excellent clubs, clean lines, compact heads, sit nicely at address, and good flight. Go like a bomb if you hit them. Used to be in the bags of quite a few tour pros and were well thought of. Wouldn't be surprised if there were still one or two using them.

Enjoy.

Steelheads are right up there as great Fairway woods. Touring Pros initially weren't too fussed with the lack of feel from Titanium fairways so steel made quite a comeback with those and equivalent models from other OEMs. TM produced a Hot Faced Steel (HFS) R7 for Tour use that looked like the 'normal' R7.

As for Drivers: there are plenty of low priced, high quality ones available that are a couple of years old, but still great clubs, if you do a spot of hunting. Ping G10 is an example. Ebay is convenient if you know what you are looking for. Always pays to hit a potential purchase though. Mates, Pro-shops (trade-ins) and even forums like this are a good place to 'experiment' either pre purchase or as a low-cost search method. Key is finding a set-up that works for you and that can take a bit of work - or turn into an obsessional hobby in itself for some of us! And don't knock cheapo ones either. I actually hit a K1 Speed, purchased for a fiver, 15 yards my past Tour R5 with nice posh shaft (which cost a huge amount more many moons ago!).

i've a steel head plus 3 wood, great club.

i would suggest don't swing at it aggressively hard, its quite a small head compared to modern clubs so easier to mishit, but when you centre it it just fires of the face, as long as any fairway i've tried, who needs an rbz.
