• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

New Season - Hurrah!

3rd of April for us.

Really looking forward to it, I can't do any worse than last year.

But before that I've got these beauties to look forward to in March:

16th - The Berkshire Blue with the Mariners
18th - The Old School Challenge at Whittington Heath
29th - Woburn Marquess and Duchess courses

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Are there no handicap counting competitions over the winter at NB?

Just a monthly medal over the winter which as it is on a Saturday clashes with the winter 4ball turnup comp which is much more sociable and fun so only a few play in the medal.

Season starting? Wraparound season at ours. Medals continue as normal during the winter!

We've had comps, usually stablefords over the winter but only one since November has actually been a qualifier. We do have a medal prior to the Easter event but the Easter event is just seen by everyone as the club as the season starter

So, a board comp is one where you get your name written on a board if you win?

For the two scores over four days comp, keep a close eye on the weather to heighten your chance of winning.

Ken,

It's a different game south of the border and you'll start a bun fight if you ask how many Stroke (gross) Comp's are played against Stableford! At one club I counted 23 of those wooden boards and I'm being serious when I say that it was embarrassing, I'll not ridicule tex mex champions between November & January or the Best Ball Marker of the year but I hope you get the picture!

As one chap once said, it saves on wall paper.

No qualifiers at my place till April, but playing in the Eyemouth Open this Saturday and have the Links Cup towards the end of March, so hopefully have 5 qualifiers this month to get off and running with this season's battle to get the handicap down.

Not counting our regular monthly comps, our first "named" comp of the year is the St Patricks Cup on 19th March. That's the one everyone regards as the season's opener. Can't wait...

Mine is a bit up in arms just now, the 4th green was lowered and made bigger and won't be back in use until mid April at the earliest and the bottom part of the course has been closed due to it being to wet, its no rained in 3 weeks, we reckon the green keeper is being to cautious with it being his first winter, it does look good tho. Might have to try and find a few opens to get some scores in

I am also playing at Eyemouth on Saturday. I always look forward to playing there. A tough course and tricky to play to your hcp, probably the most sloped greens you will ever play east of Augusta!

I'm guessing you haven't played Castle Stuart, a few of the greens there could use a windmill :)

What time do you tee off? Would be nice to say Hello if you're around at the same time.

Had 5 qualifiers so far in 2016 resulting in 2 X 0.1 and 3 X buffer.

My next qualifier is a Senior open at Princes on Tues Mar 15th. Then there's a Stableford on Sat 19th March.

Following that the MidAm season starts with a 54 hole comp at Littlestone early April and then 18 at Royal Cromer and 36 at Sheringham at the end of April. In between we have the Spring Cup at the Centurion.

I make that 9 Qualifiers between now and the end of April........or 0.9 onto my handicap if Positive Mental Attitude is to be ignored!

It's here! I've played a few winter medals but Saturday sees the first official comp of the new season! Just a texas scramble but still, it's the start!

Just as well reading some of the threads on here, fortunately we'll soon have golf to chat about again....

When do the rest of you get back into action?

:one:

Never been out of action (not quite true as I missed 2 qualifiers last week with a lower back problem). Today I played my 17th qualifier of the year with one 0.9 cut, seven buffers and 9 0.1s. We are very fortunate in having a free-draining sand-based heathland course which only closes if snowbound, so we play qualifiers all year round.

Haven't played CS, would love to.

Early! Just before 8 tee time at Eyemouth.

Same for me due to the obvious advantage in location

Season ends 30th Sept, new season starts 1st Oct so handicap at stake 12 months of the year

Got a comp this weekend to raise the flag on a brand new (2nd) green on the 18th. Yup, that means the hole will have two greens from now on, about 150yrds apart. The original doglegs right and the new one doglegs left from the tee

Medals and Stablefords run through the winter (weather permitting - so it's been sketchy to say to least) but trophies kick off in April. Not planning any entries until conditions pick up next month as golf is more like scrummaging at the moment given the persistent rain.

Kicking off with the now-traditional Dunbar Spring Open Texas Scramble on Friday, and then the Winter League Final at my place next Sunday.

Captain's drive and 9-hole sweep on Friday 1st April, and Opening Day Medal on 2nd April gets our season underway.
