Just started playing again after 10 years or so and I'm bitten by the bug. My Wilson irons are about 25 years old and I notice that iron sets for sale in pro shops seem a bit 'juicier' than mine, just a bit thicker at the head. I realise that technology has improved drivers dramatically, but is this also true for irons? I hadn't considered upgrading mine but if it adds a few yards I'd be happy to.
I wouldn't really want to fork out more than about £300 - 400 though.

Depends what level you play to really.
I don't think any of the top manufacturers make bad clubs so it's personal preference.
Are you want new or do you mind 2nd hand?
Personally I'd be looking at 2nd hand, you should get a good set in your budget.

Thank you, yeah should have said I am a high handicapper but improving slowly. Not interested in brand names or whether they're last years model. Hadn't considered second hand. Where would I go about buying used, as I wouldn't know what's value for money?

eBay.
If you're not overly bothered about the brand
Benross are worth considering.
Always get good reviews & you'll get a good set for well under budget.

Do you know your spec's, if so I'd pop on eBay and have a gander at something like the ' Callaway X' series of irons 'X12/14/16/18/20/22' you should be able to pick up a reasonably tidy set for less than a couple of hundred notes, they may need re-gripping but that's bugger all in the grand scheme of things...

If you are happy spending as much as 400 quid you can easily get Srixon 545s or last years Mizuno JPXs and essentially anything from last year. Those models are on the nicer looking side whilst still being plenty forgiving.

Have a look in the for sale/wanted section in here and maybe just post what you would be after, otherwise check out eBay. AG should have plenty in stock at the minute as well but the prices won't be the best

He hasn't got enough posts to post in the for sale section.

Thanks for the answers. Please feel free to ignore my next 'how-long-is-a-piece-of-string' question, but how much further might it be possible to achieve with new irons? 10 yards? If so, that would make it a very attractive proposition.

compared to 25 year old irons theres every chance you can gain 10 yards or more, especially on the shots you dont hit as well. best thing to do would be to go to your nearest big golf store that has a trackman or similar simulator. hit your irons to get some base numbers then hit 3 or 4 irons you like the look of in your price range, should give you a decent idea of how much you can look to gain and which clubs appeal to you

Well I started the 'Iron distances' thread a few days back, incase you've not caught any of it here's my experiences of 'old vs (sort of) new' tech if you see what I mean...

I was having trouble getting any real distance with my irons, a 7i for me was around 135-140 and I very often found myself running out of clubs around our course...

My irons were 'Mizuno T-zoid Pro II' of about 2000/2001 vintage (blades) anyway I managed to borrow a set of cavity backed game improvement irons from around 2006/7 namely 'Wilson Deep Red II MDS' and yes that's the 'Fatshaft' variety but the difference was almost instant (bar getting my eye in as it were) and my 7i suddenly went from a hard fought for 135/140yds to about 160/170...

I actually made our 10th green with the 7i on Thursday afternoon, 185 off the yellows...

Now bare in mind that the 'Fatties' are by comparison 'old tech' compared to some of the new stuff but also bare in mind they were designed for the very purpose of distance, so with that in mind I think you'll be more surprised at the ease with which you get better distance, it's at this point where you realise that the extra distance you've gained sort of becomes immaterial really...

That's my opinion anyway...

I had a go with some of this years irons borrowed from a friend at the range. Hit some with mine (2007) and the then he 2017s. It was amazing how different they were, distance and height. I just can't afford to sink money into clubs so sticking with what I got.

Does make me wonder what I could do with a modern ironset however, east gain 10 yards for a club with more consistency.
