Consider:
woods are no longer made of wood
irons are no longer made of iron
pitching wedges are not necessarily for pitching

Clean start, what would you name these tools of the trade?

We can probably keep the putter.

Not directly answering your question, but imagine doing what I do, lots of corporate clinics in a far away land where they've never heard of golf.... :

Here's what it's like introducing the basics :

Woods.... Made of titanium, carbon, steel

Irons.... Made of steel

Greens.... The green bit, oh... it's all green....

Tee..... The tee, a tee (peg) , tee off.....

Grip... The way you hold it

Grip.... The rubber bit....

The end of the club, the "head" .... And on the front of the head, obviously the face... And also on the head? OBVIOUSLY... the sole, toe and heel.....

Ha ha yes see your challenge there!

I am finding it hard, obviously am not creative enough.

USA is a big market, and they seem to keep things simple - i.e. sidewalk, elevator

Off the tee 10
Sweeper 15
Rescues 17 & 22
9 Divot Takers of various lofts

Or

Big Dog
Fairway Seeker
Recovery
Green Seekers

Oh, and I forgot my favourite :
Hole.

The WHOLE area from the tee (not the wooden thing, the area where we tee off) until you reach the green, no not all the green grass but the shorter grass at the end that's the same colour but is called "green", and at the end of the whole hole is a, you guessed it, HOLE.

Maybe we need to go more traditional:

Drive - Driver
3 Wood - Brassie
5 Wood - Spoon
7 Wood/Rescue - Baffing Spoon
Rescue - Cleek
3 Iron: Mid Mashie
4 Iron - Mashie Iron
5 Iron - Mashie
6 Iron - Spade Mashie
7 Iron - Mashie Niblick
8 Iron - Pitching Niblick
9 Iron - Niblick
PW - Jigger
SW - Sand Wedge
Putter - Putter

13 Chazzwazzas and a putter then. Happy with that

Liking all the suggestions so far.

[Dropping back to current names] Was thinking, inside 40 yards I can use any of the irons (even a hybrid sometimes) for pitching & chipping. I also at times hit full shots with the wedges from further out. So is there a need to differentiate them as we have done historically? They are both pretty similar in design and many of us use them interchangeably.
