Returning to Golf after several years away due to other interests and family/work commitments.

I am now looking for a club in the Widnes/Warrington/South Liverpool area to join, looking for a friendly club as non of my mates play  so need a club where new members are welcome.

Have previously been a member of Mersey Valley, and played years ago at Allerton, looking at Widnes, Fiddlers Ferry, Mersey Valley and Eccleston Park.

Any views or other recommendations? - or anyone fancy a game sometime

Thanks for the comments, will call down to Widnes and have a look round, The only issue with Frodsham (and Runcorn) are the travel times with the constant problems of the Bridge!!

Fiddlers Ferry is attached to a driving range with 2 very good teaching pro's, Adrian Friar and Steve Holden.

Never played the course so can't comment too much but the practice facility at True Fit Golf is excellent.

Valentino, I have been TGF driving range a few times recently (last night) but not sure about wether the course is just a course or also has a club, there is not a lot on the web or in the shop about the course.

Hi Jpenno,

I'll happily sign you in as a visitor at Lymm. If we mention your interested in joining i'm sure you will get courtesy of the course for a round.

TFG facilites are fantastic but I've heard the course can get quite wet and doesnt drain well. Not a fan of Mersey valley, but Frodsham is nice, and Antrobus and Heyrose are improving no end. In the past Antrobus and Heyrose didnt drain that well, but I believe they have invested heavily in drainage.

You've got a decent choice where you're looking at though Mersey valley is very poor.

I've played widnes and although it's a nice course it's very bland and the greens aren't that good.

Huyton and Prescot is nice but runs along the m57 and can be quite noisy for 4 or 5 holes.

Blundells hill is another very nice course but it seems to allow a lot of society golfers on so I don't know how easy it is to get tee times booked.

Childwall is a very nice course but quite set in its ways.

Woolton and West Derby both get very wet and suffer in the winter months.

Lee park is a decent course. I play here so you're more than welcome to have a game here with me.

Grange park in st helens is another nice course, but I think they still have a joining fee.

Where about do you live?

They got any good deals in the shop? Ain't been in for a while, I normally go here if Im in the area with work.

they have a decent sale on at the minute, currently considering some R11 fairway woods, but also eyeing up the new Cobra ones and need some new shoes and a bag!!.

They used to have a cracking selection of shoes in that wee room, I heard they are developing the shop with a new cafe and a refurb.

Steve Holden is the Pro I have lessons with and I would recommend him to anyone, really nice fella and a great Teacher

TFG is well stocked shop but i find it quite pricey to be honest.

Grange Park is nice but joining fee is £950 then subs are £950,its very dry in the winter though and is a good tester.

looks like joining fees are likely to play a big part in my decisions, it appears that about 50% of local clubs have them.

Do you play there?

Nice course but at £1800 for the 1st year no thank you.

West lancs isn't much more to join.

Would agree with most of the above from Stu. I'm also at Lee park. The thing is with the south end of Liverpool is it doesn't have any "premier" courses, like hillside/formby/S and A/west lancs etc. Frodsham is probably the best for the area your taking about, and I considered joining it, but as you say the bridge is the main problem.

What I like about Lee park is it is a good working mans club and has that type of atmosphere. The course has honestly been getting 4-5% better year on year over the last 5 years. You also can play lots of other courses for free/half price also, which is worth at leat £200 a year to me, at least. The course is a good 7/10 for 8-9 months of the year, and our greens were some of the best in the north west over the last 2 years.

Woolton is full of "colonels" so I'm led to believe.

Lee park has no joining fee anymore, although I'm still paying mine, as in them days they spread it over 10 years.

Green fees are about £870 (I think) a year, membership is open and my mate does the interviews, normally.I think they also have "taster" membership options for a 2 month option, or something like that. But as Stu says, try it with one of us first, if you like.

If you travel around the country (especially London) there are other great courses to be had for free rounds. Also 20+ NW golf courses who we have 2for1 midweek options.
