Name the top 5 best known golf course's worldwide...

Augusta
Old Course
Pebble Beach

and any two of the following...
Muirfield, Carnoustie, TPC Sawgrass, Loch Lomond, Wentworth, TPC Scottsdale.

I was out for a quick round last night and this question popped up by one of my mate's. We agreed on most of the course's but 1 or 2 were up for debate. Here are my top 5 in no real order

1. St Andrew's(prob going to be everybodys no.1)
2. Agusta national.
3. Pebble Beach.
4. Old Head Of Kinsale
5. Troon.

What would your Top 5 be???
Old Head? Don't see how it could be, doesn't hold a major tournament, so gets no coverage, so no way is it even well known never mind one of the top 5.

Same for those saying Wentworth, doubt the Yanks would have much clue, the Belfry for example due to it's repeated Ryder Cups would have a better profile worldwide, especially with it's particularly memorable 10th & 18th holes.

The top 2 are easy, and obvious, and are St Andrews & Augusta; there's just no argument, even in this thread it's unanimous.

The next three would have to come from a course that has both memorable holes and repeat top level events that gain worldwide coverage, like the Belfry, or Sawgrass. Pebble Beach has to be in the running as it gets a frequent run at the US Open, and all of the other Open courses due also to their frequency.

I dare say if you took a poll of worldwide golfers right now, Celtic Manor would also be a good shout, but that will fade with no repeat significant event.

So...

1. St Andrews
2. Augusta
3 to 5. (perm any three) Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, Belfry, Celtic Manor, Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham, Carnoustie, Troon, Turnberry, Muirfield.

Of the Open courses though, Sandwich & Hoylake don't have the same reputation in my view, so miss the cut.

1 St Andrews (obvious why)
2 Augusta National (most TV coverage)
3 Pebble Beach (huge iconic course for coastline)
4 Turnberry (everyone knows the lighthouse & hotel)
5 Prestwick (where the Open all began)

I thought I would answer this by asking a non-golfer (my mrs) to name as many as she could.

After 10 minutes all she had come up with was St. Andrews so I gave up.

Best known.....right now

St Andrews
Augusta National
TPC Sawgrass

And any two from the others that popped into my head: Pebble Beach, Celtic Manor, Gleneagles, Wentworth, Torrey Pines...

Great idea
Mrs sev112 came up with in this order :
Wentworth (well we pretty much live down the road and go for walks in Virginia water when it's sunny)
That one in Atlanta
St Andrews
The Belfry
That one in North Carolina (here Head office is there), No not Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst

She's just come up with Augusta (or Augustus as she put it).

That didn't take long
I'll have the rest of the list for you by Christmas 2013.

My wife came up with
St Andrews
Carnoustie
"Where the Masters is played"
Gleneagles
The one in America along the clifftops (I'm assuming she means Pebble Beach)

I was watching it this afternoon.

She said "Where's this being played?"
Me : "Wentworth"
Mrs : "I've heard of Wentworth. Don't they have horse racing there? I didn't know there was a golf course."

If you are looking for the 5 most known courses amongst golfers and non golfers then I think the nail was hit on the head earlier when someone mentioned the Tiger Woods game. Millions of people play them and could probably name their 5 favourite courses not knowing if they were real or made up for the game. Most probably know a couple of other courses as well. With this in mind I would say

St Andrews
Augusta
Sawgrass
Bay Hill
Pinehurst

St Andrews

Augusta

Pebble Beach

Sawgrass

And the place where it all began...

Coulsdon Court.

Well I assume everyone makes a pilgrimage to it.

Don't they ?
