My Swing Vs Rory’s (Swing Home Truths)

The thing I noticed the first time was backswing length. It was a lot longer than I ever thought it was, and a lot longer than it felt it was. It is still longer than I'd like and still doesn't feel like it is that long. To make a shorter swing I feel like I need to stop about waist height and then it gets to where I'd like it. Just cant get it consistently.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I tried to shorten my backswing, because I tend to lose control over the club at the top of my backswing a bit when I overswing. So I did what felt like a 3/4 swing and there was virtually no difference on video. So I shortened it even further. Now I have the feeling that I am doing a half swing at the most and I can still sometimes see the clubhead out of the corner of my left eye at the top of my swing :D But especially with the longer clubs it has helped me a lot to control the club better in the downswing.

In Pennick's Little Red Book, he says he tells his clients to feel like they are laying the club onto the thumb of the right hand in the backswing. That's actually more of a grip issue than backswing-lenght, I guess, but that feeling has also helped me to stop the club form going too far back.

Yeah I need to put the time into get it short, probs just the wrong time of year to start working on it.

Ive just read the little red book, but mustn't have taken that tip in, maybe as you say because its more a grip tip. But I'll certainly give it a thought. Just got Pennick's little green book to read as well hopefully its as good as the first.

I got a friend to film my swing on Friday on my phone to enable me to watch back in super slow motion. What an eye opener. I watched it today and it immediately threw up a few shocks. I played it back alongside Rory’s swing to see what the differences was. It was pretty ugly! Even though I think my driver is outside my hands it certainly isn’t. I feel like I am coming from the inside but no its over top. These were not massive shocks but the thing that was, was a big chicken wing that I never knew I had, it explains a lot and is pretty consistent with my misses. At least I know what I need to work on, I wish I had done it sooner. Has anyone else ever seen there swing and realised it is nothing like they think?

Yup, i was filmed 20 odd years ago by the area coach
I THOUGHT my swing was pretty similar to Ernie Els (My putting might be) but in fact it was more like an angry Jim Furyk, the first time you see your action on film I think most people get a shock!

I am over it now. Going to hit the range hard armed with the knowledge of what I have seen.
