my goals

my h/cap is now 25.4, PB is 83 in a sunday morning 4-ball. having only been playing since march time, i think next year im going to make quite a drop in h/cap. my aim is to drop 8-10 shots, thus aiming for h/cap of 15 by the end of next year. do I think can do it? most definatly! its not the physical part of the game, its the mental part. i am my own worst enemy of the course without a doubt!!

Good luck.

Wish i could work on my game and get down low as well. Trouble with me is i can't hit balls except on the course.
went out to the practice ground on Sunday, only hit about 10 balls all sh*nked. Went over to the 9 hole course hit 5 balls off the first tee, hooked all of them, picked them up and went home:(

Played Monday in the roll up shot 48 points with 7 or 8 birdies in that. so now i just turn up and play, and have done that most of this year, not always worked but better than if i've tried to practice!!!!!

Just to give an idea of how easy or hard it would be to get down that quickly, I just went through my qualifying scores this year and worked out what I would have got down to if I started on 28.

I had 24 qualifying rounds and would have made single figures after the 17th one. Final h/c would have been 9 (8.7)

My actual handicap is 8 (7.9)

So you have come down from 10.5 to 7.9 in one season (2.6), ive seen comments on here about your scores on a regular basis, and was also at blackmoor when you won so know roughly what sort of level of game you must have. if its took someone with good basics and a good season to come from 10... to 8, thats shows how hard it is.

The question is region, are you happy with the amount you have dropped.

for me i struggled at the start(may) and went upto 9.5 and on the 3rd of july i was playing off 9.5 according to the master scoreboard.

then by the 3rd of september(2mnths later)i was playing off 6.3!!!

then over the next month with a few medals and comps being cancelled i got down to 5.8 by the 16th of october.i played 5 medals from the 3rd of september to the 16th of oct and went up to 6.6 befor egetting cut on the last medal to 5.8......

In 2010 i started the year on 12.5 and was down to 8 by the end of July, then went up 0.1 all but 4 round this year, 3 buffers and a 1.2 shot reduction for an open i won so i'm on 8.8. Thats about my level i think as i cant practice or have lessons that involve any sort of range. had such high hopes of getting to 5 or 6 at least this year, but went the other way. I can have the odd round in the low 70's or mis 90's.

Just enjoy the game and play now.

Oh and Crawford, Get Te!

I'm going, I'm going.

I'd like to get down to 18 next year and anything below that will be a bonus. Last year was my first season with a handicap and the pressure got to me a bit at times. But now i know to try not loose my head after the first bad hole or shot and stop expecting myself to play perfect golf hopefully next year it will help my handicap come down a bit more.

To those guys coming down from cat3/4 handicaps.
The best bit of advice I could give as a cat2 player is that the biggest teller will be your short game.
Anyone can hack it round in 28 over with no real imagination around the greens. When it comes to single figures you have to be consistently good at getting the ball close should you miss the green (and you will miss greens).

I know plenty of fellas who have a horrible putting style chipping motion which just doesnt work when there are obstacles between you and the flag. Usually the ball either gets lodged in the face of the bunker or runs by the hole like a train.

Knowing that there are a multitude of ways of getting up and down is the secret and not just whopping out the 60 degree neither. Learn how to play all the shots not just the one. Far from being an expert in this, its not hard to tell what a guys handicap is when it comes to watching them pitch and chip.

Good luck to all that set themselves a goal. My ultimate goal is scratch and what appears to be on my side just recently is that I appear to have learned how to putt! I have always felt as though I hit the ball well enough.

However, to do this (from currently 5.2) in one year is frankly, asking way too much and I could not put in the number of cards required (yet alone good cards!). I can play once a week and practice twice a week, maybe three times in the summer. One good thing is our course SSS has gone up 1, so that might take care of 1 of the 5!

But for me its a case of seeing how good I could actually get, over the next 6 years (I will be 50 then).

Whether your are cat 4 or whatever, its short game short game and short game............Its putting and where you start from.
