my goals

Hi OddSocks.

I understand what you are saying. I hope to be getting cuts of more than 0.8 each comp I play in April, reflecting the scores I'm shooting at present, I think with another 3.5 months more practice and fine tuning along with the fitness/weight loss plan the cut to 20ish should be quick, after that I have no idea. But really it all sounds good in my head lol.
Will start a proper thread of my own at the start of the season and give regular updates maybe get a screenshot of my hcap and 2011 Scores to compare it too.

Thanks for the replies guys and sorry for hijacking your thread Wull.

To those guys coming down from cat3/4 handicaps.
The best bit of advice I could give as a cat2 player is that the biggest teller will be your short game.
Anyone can hack it round in 28 over with no real imagination around the greens. When it comes to single figures you have to be consistently good at getting the ball close should you miss the green (and you will miss greens).

I know plenty of fellas who have a horrible putting style chipping motion which just doesnt work when there are obstacles between you and the flag. Usually the ball either gets lodged in the face of the bunker or runs by the hole like a train.

Knowing that there are a multitude of ways of getting up and down is the secret and not just whopping out the 60 degree neither. Learn how to play all the shots not just the one. Far from being an expert in this, its not hard to tell what a guys handicap is when it comes to watching them pitch and chip.

This is the part of the game I am strongest at and love. Basically because it has been my most played part of the game having had months of missing greens. Though my weakest point is bunkers which I need to work on.

Just to give an idea of how easy or hard it would be to get down that quickly, I just went through my qualifying scores this year and worked out what I would have got down to if I started on 28.

I had 24 qualifying rounds and would have made single figures after the 17th one. Final h/c would have been 9 (8.7)

My actual handicap is 8 (7.9)

?? surely thats calculating it on you a a single figure golfer playing off of 28 and then descending, this is completely at odds to a 28 handicapper trying to come down, nice idea tho'

Good luck Wull, I'd love to say I have similar ambitions but even I'm realistic to know I'll never be that good. I'd like to get to a handicap that means I'm not teetering on the edge of going back up to 10 every time I play and to shoot a level par round (although I'm not sure how my nerves will cope if I ever get to the 18th tee with a chance to achieve it)

Top advice Brendy.
I'm afraid I'm one of the fools who tries to do everything with the PW and will get out the 60 deg if I absolutely have to. (And neither are that impressive if I'm honest).
I've been out with many cat 2 players and their short games are so much better than mine. For a while I thought it was all about the putting, but you've summed up the biggest difference perfectly

So you have come down from 10.5 to 7.9 in one season (2.6), ive seen comments on here about your scores on a regular basis, and was also at blackmoor when you won so know roughly what sort of level of game you must have. if its took someone with good basics and a good season to come from 10... to 8, thats shows how hard it is.

The question is region, are you happy with the amount you have dropped.

I was happy with the amount I dropped, but a little disappointed that I crept back up to 8 after reaching 7 a month or so before the season finished.

Bash I've seen your short game at close quarters and it really isn't that bad. If I could get to anything like your current level I'd be happy and lower. If anything with you it is the putting thats the issue and the 3-6 footers in particular.

On the subject of goals I've found them a mill stone rather than a motivation and wanted to get from 11-9 and instead tried too hard and went to 13 instead. Its only times when I've played with a plan, not worried (aka any GM Forum meet or the Centenary events, and any 4 ball club match) that I've produced my best form. The reason? The handicap isn't on the line but there is still a goal to go for. I'm not setting any targets for 2012. I'll have my lesson tomorrow, see if the guy and I click and I like his methods and go from there over the winter. Next year I'll play and the handicap can take care of itself one way or another. A couple of lessons and short game practice until March and then put of the traps quickly

You're right, it was just an exercise to see what would have happened.

It shows that someone on a completely artificial handicap can reach their level in around 15-20 comps, and also how hard it must be for someone who is a genuine 28 (or even low 20's) to get down to sf's in one season (although a lot probably have more opportunities than me for qualifying comps).

28 to 9 would be an immense achievement.

Go for it.

Set up a twitter account for that task alone and only tweet the progress. When you achieve it print them out and keep it as a diary.

Best of luck.

Ash!!

My aim is to get down to 12 by end of 2012 season from my 16.7. Good luck Wull! U dont want to live with regret!Phil, big ask but aim for it! U'll never know till u try and sounds like uve good backup with being the pro's experiment! 😄

Gonna try my hardest. But I know in my own head that I need the weight loss and improved flexibility/cardio vascular fitness to get close. My pro has said the same thing, because it A) Hinders my stamina on the course and on the range. and B) Has a negative effect on my concentration toward the end of a round when it comes to thinking about course management and short game.

So I am going to have to work extremely hard until start of April and try and keep it up to a reasonable level throughout the season to be able to put in the amount of practice and play required.

The twitter idea sounds good so I may give it a go on there to keep a record.

good luck wull, i think you could get down very low

i remember one of your first posts with a video of your swing, looked really good especially considering you've only been back in the game for just a year! (like me :) )

my aim is to try and get good conistency in direction, not to worried about length,

my pb of 2 over gross back in the day was down to lots of straight ones, nothing spectaular just consistent, love to get that back again

My aim for 2012 is simply to hit the ball straight with anything longer than a 7 iron, oh and I desperately want to break 100, both of which were my aims for 2011 :(

If these were your goals this year, what are you going to do differently next year to achieve them?

Target is to get down to <10 HC from 14.5.

I am 40 in Jan 2013 and plan to celebrate by tee-ing off at Turnberry Ailsa as a single figure golfer.

Do it, do it !!

looks like im going to finish the year off at 12.1, wanted to shift that 0.1 this weekend but its not going to happen. target for next year is 10, if i could get to 9 id be one happy man, but i know my iron play needs alot of work to get there, especially in the mid to long irons. if i can tighten dispersion and consistency on 6/5/4/3i, its possible.,
