Here is a list of my clubs and the distances that I expect to reach with each club

Driver Callaway Rogue Reg Shaft 225
3 Wood Callaway Big Bertha (with Epic driver shaft) 210
7 Wood. Callaway Big Bertha 180
Hybrid Callaway Epic 5 190
Irons 5-PW Orka GS5 CTI Flatline 80A Graphite
5 Iron 165
6 iron 155
7 iron 140
8 iron 125
9 iron 110
PW (47 degrees) 100
Wedges Cleveland 588 RTX 52, 56, 60
52 W 90
56 W 75
60 W 60

I'm not getting on with my 5 iron at all and am looking for something to fill the gap between 150 and 180 yards

I have a Wilson FG tour utility /4 iron but I suspect that will be similar to the current hybrid

Suggestions folks please, am I looking at a higher lofted hybrid? feel free to pass on any ideas

Cheers

If I was to have 3 x "5"'s in my bag, the approx yardages would be:-

5 iron @ 170-180 yards
5 hybrid 185-195 yards
5 Wood 200-215 yards

I do have 2 of the above 3 in, but dont let the numbers on the bottoms of the clubs dictate, let the yardages dictate the true gapping - nowt wrong with having all 3.(y)

How do the hybrid and 7 wood compare?

I'm thinking the 7 wood has perhaps 3 deg less loft, but how about shaft length?

Is the 7 wood doing what it's meant to? I notice it goes slightly less distance than the hybrid, unless you've just written them in that order to keep the woods together?

But yeah generally speaking, why not replace the 5 iron with another hybrid? Or replace the 5 iron and 7w with two hybrids for better gapping even? Myself and plenty of other forum members have done it. My bag goes 5wd, three hybrids and then 7 iron, so anything 160-200 I'm hitting a hybrid. I strike them miles better than I ever hit a 6 or 5 iron in my life.

I'm not wholly convinced you get 190 yards out of your 5 hybrid......I'm looking at 200 from my 3 hybrid.
I'd be expecting 190 from the 7 wood....then 175 or so with the 5h. Have you got those numbers around the wrong way..?
If you're swinging well the "Frankenwood" sees you right but if your swing is a bit off it gets you into more trouble.....
A more lofted hybrid would replace the 5 iron nicely...the 5h you have will loft up to 28° or you could find a 6h with 28-30°
Really, I suppose, you need to get a fitter to look at the top end of your bag but you need to get your swing under control too.
It'll be easier to work on your gaps

Right I'm new so don't bully me - but I hit a 5 iron 185+ yards.. I'm yet to actually get my handicap - Am I hitting my irons too hard? I'm a pretty fit 26 year old but the differences you get in yardage to me on irons are quite big? My 9 is easy 140? - and this is when it goes straight

A 3 iron to hit it out of the trees with ;):p

How about a 9 wood has been a great gap filler for me at 165 yard carry, very forgiving and high flying (this fits in between a 5 and 6 iron for me). So I am 7 iron (150 carry), 9 wood (165 carry) and 7 wood (180 carry)

I tried a M1 high lofted 5(I think it is) hybrid lofted right up(its in the shed) but found it flew fairly low and therefore had far to much run on it for my liking/control, would be a good club on a links.

I go...
Driver- whatever
5 wood turned down to a 4 wood (16.5). 200-220 depending on roll.
20 hybrid- 180+
24 hybrid- 165-170+
5 iron- 160
6 iron-150
7 iron- 140
8 iron-130
9 iron-110
pw-90-100
52- 70-80
56- 60-70
60- 45-55
I was using a 16 degree hybrid instead of the 5w. I could turn it down to 14 or up to 18. I might give it another try, and if it doesn't cut it will get rid of it. This time of the year with more roll it might be worth giving it a try.

As Imurg was implying, old folks don't hit it as far. Too many things keep breaking. I'll be 63 pretty quick, I used to hit my irons up to 200.....now I need that 5 wood.

Don't flatter yourself. I'm over 50 and I have been on the range today and hit my 5 iron 186, 201, 198 yards. Biggest 9 iron hit 147, and that's with range balls. ;)

A nice legs eleven club, wolf whistle:LOL:

I got an adams 11 wood off ebay cheap, as wanted a play (I have the adams 7, 9 and 11 wood) and hit the 11 wood around 150-155 which was about the same distance as the 7 iron(150).

So wouldn't think it will fill the gap of your 5 iron you are looking for given your yardages above.

Im a bit late to this party Phil but Id suggest working on commitment. Longer irons need a confident swipe in my opinion, dont be backing off.
