As usual i hit my ball in the rough today and ended up with a massive mud ball. Because of the mud i wasn't able to identify my ball. I asked my fc to lift the ball to see if i could identify it. I still couldn't. I had to remove the mud to see my identifying mark. Anyone know if this is in breach of any rules?

Did you clean off all the mud or just a small section to enable you to id the ball?

If you cleaned it all off you may have breeched the rules unless it was just enough mud to cover an id mark.

Rule 21

You are able to rotate the ball when replacing so that mud wouldn't interfere with the club face but not tee up the all on the mud. Decision 21/5

In trying to remove the mud it ended up mostly falling off in a big scab! My fc replaced the ball and i carried on.

If you intention was to only remove enough mud necessary for ID then so be it. Only you can tell if the mud was removed in a way that the minimal necessary for ID though.

One question though, why did you ask your FC to do the pick up?

I was accused by said player durring a comp once for improving my lie after identification of my ball. He was quite passionate about it so i had him do it eliminate any doubt

Thought it might be something like that. Sounds like a fun guy to play with ;)

I usually put 6 marks on my ball (one on each number, colour the alignment aid, and then 3 marks around the circumference) and have started playing yellow Wilsons like my avatar. It's a bit like one of those pool cue balls by the time I play with it. Very rare I can't identify it.

This is specifically allowed, but only to the extent of being able to identify the ball. The fact that it was your 'suspicious' FC that 'removed the scab' removes suspicion from you that excessive cleaning was done imo. but if could be iffy.

Btw. Be careful when getting a FC to do something. If he breaches a Rule, you suffer the Penalty!
