Earlier in the year, my missus had been making some noises about moving to Glasgow. This was to be closer to our daughter, who lives in Glasgow currently, and who give birth in October with first grandkid.
The wife has now been offered a transfer to another store by her old boss who now manages the new store in question which is in Linwood on the new retail park. She's seriously considering it as she gets on really well with her and they work well together, whereas the new manager in her current store is a ***** and she can't stand him. Plus she'd be closer to daughter and newborn grandson.
Our 17-year old son isn't keen on the idea at all, and is looking to make his own way in life. But he only works part-time and wouldn't be able to afford a place of his own just yet on the meagre wages he makes. I know if he moved with us he'd be miserable, and he became very insular when we moved to Edinburgh three years ago before moving back to Livingston last year. I'm not totally sold on the idea either as I'm fixed for work in Edinburgh and would either have to commute every day, or arrange to work from home, or find another job.
Neither my wife or I really know Glasgow, so I ask where would you suggest we focus our attention on (or avoiding!) Our daughter lives in Yorkhill, a near stones-throw away from Kelvingrove, so we'd ideally like to be fairly close to her in the West End, or Southside across the Squinty Bridge but we would want a house rather than a flat, and I wouldn't mind being close to a golf course...
The wife spent last night trawling Lettingweb, S1Homes and others for ideas about places.
So far last night she looked at..
Castlemilk (Birgidale Road, Ardencraig Road)
Rutherglen (Fernhill Road)
Pollok (Dormanshide Road)
Maryhill (Hamiltonhill Gardens)
Lambhill (Erradale Street)
We'd be looking at getting a house, 3/4 beds up to £650pcm, ideally in a Virgin Media enabled area. So long as the place doesn't have burnt out cars everywhere, rampant gangs of neds, can walk the streets without having to dodge dog-doo, beer cans and buckfast bottles, and you don't fear for your telly still being there anytime you leave the house, we'd be pretty open as to area.
Easy public transport to Yorkhill/Kelvingrove/City centre that doesn't involve half-a-dozen buses would be an added plus.
