short and medium irons, yes.
Long irons/hybrids/fairway woods....hands level promoting a sweeping action (some will disagree)
Driver...hands a little behind the the ball.
These are for standard shots.
Just my opinion of course

afaik you can still have a sweeping action with the hands ahead albeit less ahead the lower the number

Look to the design of the club. When the club is soled to the ground with the face square to target the shaft will have a specific amount of forward lean designed into it, the longer the club the less the shaft will lean forward. Try to respect the design of the club at impact.

I do it the same way, as Brian stated. Find it the easyest way as it does not matter what lie you have. Up hill or down hill.
