Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Can't believe Casey was left out in favour of Harrington.. :D
I am not pro or anti Harrington so I do not see the surprise at him getting picked, they are playing matchplay which isnt strokeplay.
To be honest, Id rather not play against a 3 time major winner compared to casey who is temperemental and can be as patchy as Harrington.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Agree it seems harsh to leave out Casey but it's the qualifying system that's all wrong imo, not Monty's fault.
They should pick the top ten Europeans from the world rankings and give the captain 2 picks.
The world rankings gives a more accurate picture of form over the period leading up to the RC.
We wouldn't have Fisher (poor this year) or Jimenez or the Swede whose name I forget in it then and we would have classy players who happen to prefer the PGA tour such as Casey and Rose in the team.
I like Harrington but I don't think he's done enough this year to get in. Great putter though so may do a Poulter and play a blinder.
Casey out, Rose out and Westwood unfit isn't great.

I think its subjective, the Ryder Cup is Matchplay, why use strokeplay to measure a mans performance at all? (obvious reasons, I know!)
The Ryder Cup would be better in my opinion if the captain had a panel of three behind him and they all had to pick the entire team based on who they think would make the best team and most entertaining golf on the day. But then, thats only me.
It is not an all inclusive competition so should be seen as a showcase of talent rather than balls out winning.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

I agree with everyone that says Casey should be in over Harrington. I like the other 2 picks though, spot on!

I think maybe if Casey were Irish or Scottish he'd be there! lol

Seriously though, He is a proven matchplay winner and his temperment is normally great! He is higher in the WR and playing better than Padraig, plus his rc past is decent too!

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

European Tour have too much influence over the team, they are trying to blackmail top European players into playing small European Tour events in order to get into the team. Those top players haven't responded to being blackmailed and so some miss out on the RC.
Casey and Rose have oodles more class than some of the Euros picked. Even Martin Laird is looking like a real prospect now but he'd have no chance of a pick with the current system unless he won a Major.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

absolutely right! it seems that the stubbornness of the european tour to accept that the PGA tour has a higher quality field is at fault here. I mean in what world does peter hanson and miguel angel jiminez get the nod over paul casey and justin rose who have been consistently two of the worlds best players this year. It seeems to me to be more like an exercise in the diversity of the european union rather than picking the best team to win, and yet another example of montys disdain towards players who choose to play on the PGA tour. the yanks must be laughing their arses off.

One more thing why has he picked sergio as a vice captain in the same team as harrington. hes made no effort to hide his dislike for harrington. in my opinion have one or the other but not both of them.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Well, whatever the rights and wrongs of the Captains picks, we've now got four weeks of intense media hype before the event begins.

Here's hoping that our medai are a little kinder to the Team than they were when Nick Faldo was Captain last time around.

We now know the Team, so let's get behind them and give them 100% support.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Good call with Garcia, he'll just annoy his own team.

Monty to Rhys Davies - " You're not in my team but seeing as this thing is in Wales and your Welsh, tell you what, you can drive my kart, how about that?".
I'd have told him to F right off!

He's a professional sportsman, not a cabby!

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

You can't blame the European Tour for wanting to protect their sponsors and their brand. If they don't try and get as competitive a field as they can even in the smaller events, sponsors will pull out and the tour will lose events. Look how many we have in England now.

By the same token you can't blame the players for wanting to make as much cash as they can and play for as many world ranking points as possible and that means America is always going to be a lure. Why else do you thing the likes of McIlroy are planning to play so much out there.

I think the system needs to be one or the other. You either use the Tour OOM and so the guys playing in the US have to be playing really well in the majors (which I think count to the OOM points) or shoot low when they come over for the BMW etc. Alternatively you go on the top 10 plus two picks based on the world rankings and free the guys to play their won schedules. Both have merits but I fear if we went down the world ranking road it would put a lot of pressure on the European Tour to keep attracting sponsors which is where the money to develop the Challenge Tour and therefore the next crop of talent comes from.

One thing I'd love to see though is a joint announcement of the wild card picks. I think its unfair that we've picked and Pavin hasn't and can now think more about possible pairings etc

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

damn right birdieman. he says hes picked molinari on what he did today which is all well and good and personally i dont really have a problem with him being in the team, but if hes picked molinari on his form today then wot will happen if rose or casey win the barclays (which they are both in a position to do). who would you rather have? a bloke who won the czech open (hardly a major is it) or either of two players one of which has won twice on the PGA tour (rose) and the other one of the most consistent big stage players of the past 5 years (casey).

ive just seen on sky sports that if westwood isnt fit to play then the replacement wikk be simon dyson automatically rather than another captains pick. if that happens we will have more rookies than experienced RC players. its an absolute joke. the european tour have turned the RC into an example of political correctness rather than a serious tournament.

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Two wins in seven weeks shows a bit of form from Edoardo Molinari does it not ?

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

yes it does and as i said i agree with that pick. i think as for picks he should have left out harrington, he just hasnt d=shown enough form for the past two years lets not forget it wasnt that long ago he couldnt make a cut to save his life. montys reasoning for takin him was that he had won 3 majors, well by that reasoning why not take faldo hes won 6.

what i think is really at fault here is the way the team is picked. we slate the american team all the time for not taking the ryder cup serious enough, that it seems more like a ceremonial tournament to them. how can we be so hypocritical to say they dont take the cup seriously then we go and pick a ceremonial team.

What if Laird wins it? It's all what if's. What if Casey, Rose, Harrington etc actually made time to play more European Tour events and actually qualified as per the criteria that's there. They know it and we know it. But they chase the money so take the chance of not being a wildcard pick. That is up to them!

For what it's worth i think Rose should be there ahead of Harrington but that is all i'd change. Donald has had a very good season after all the injury problems he had last year and is solid and dependable in the RC.

Molinari in the last 2 years has been brilliant. last season after not getting his tour card he won 3 events, came 2nd 3 times and was third twice on the Challenge Tour then won the world cup with his brother. Got on the big tour and has won twice on his debut year. that's great golf by any standards.
I'll bet that he was told. Go out and win today and your a wildcard. 3 holes to go and it's not looking to good... Bird, Bird, Bird. Thats not just great golf, that's amazing golf!

Re: Molinari, Harrington & Donald

Neither Casey, Rose nor Harringtom deserved to be in the team. Montgomerie had to make a stand for the Euro Tour - these guys forget where they come from and what they owe to all involved in euro pro golf, especially the sponsors.
