mobiles on the golf course

being a bit anal, but anyone carrying a mobile phone during a comp, that can access information like temp, direction ect, is in breech of appendix 4, whether on or off.
totally stupid rule, as i have to call my own penalties,
but thats the great minds of the R and A not understanding technology and trust, or they have lots of shares in sky caddie

page 162
appendix IV
section 5
thats my interpritation, but i stand to be corrected
but as i said dinosaur ruling, that infers we cheat if we have a smart phone, or similar device, which i have.

Any other time and I'm with the the OP and think they should be used for emergencies only and texting, surfing etc is a big no no when playing particularly in a comp
What's the difference between surfing and texting? Is it ok for the player to use his phone if he tells you he's sending a text and not surfing? Ridiculous.

If you're on call, then I can understand, other than that, switch the bloody thing off.

was paired up with someone i never played with before for a two man team matchplay and he spent the whole round either texting or checking the scores on the football. really began to annoy me after a while and i felt put off TBH.
anyone have a similar experience? i don't mind someone walking down the 18th calling for a lift home or up the the restaurant to put some food on for them but the while round is just ridiculous!
sorry for the rant

I don't agree with that at all. To me that is just plain rude!

I keep my mobile phone in my pocket, on silent however.

I have a young son and always keep my phone with me in case of emergencys.

Good thread.... despise mobile use on the course, even on the range it's bordering on rude. We play golf to get away from it surely?

Modern society thing I reckon, like people that are out for something to eat and cant keep off their smart phone.

I've always got mine with me, but it's on silent. Given the location, it's impossible keeping away from the blasted thing a lot of the time.

For personal, I have no qualms with sending HID a text while i'm out - if i'm contactable, it's less of a disappearing act for 6 hours of the morning. If anyone whinged at me for it, i'd tell them to wind their necks in.

If you do it while other people are getting clubs out of their bags, wetting towels, filling drinks bottles etc, what's the harm?

Just another thing that modern man likes to have a good drip about.

I have mine on silent at all times. Check texts from time to time, mainly to see what time I'm allowed out until.

Little Jockey - I assume there are exceptions, say if you want to take a photo of a player in your group whose ball is constantly ending up behind the trees or if you want to text mates about a particularly good front 9? ;)

That Laughing Gravy would be the only exception!!!!!

Im totally in the NO Mobiles camp
I carry mine in my golf bag, but it is switched OFF as soon as I arrive in the car park
I go to the golf course, to avoid distractions, and enjoy the golf on my days off
I do however have mates that live their life on the phone, sometimes I can ignore and let it go, other times.....gets right under my skin, like 2 weeks ago, was playing at my mates course, teed off on par5 8th hole, we got 350-400yds ( not tee shots ) down fairway, when he announces he has LOST his phone.......!!!
He ran all the way back to previous hole, we had to wave a 4ball of seniors through, he found phone, ran all the way back, and whinged cos we were held up rest of the round......

Mobiles should be switched on, only if somebody has a genuine reason, ie....sick relative at home, pregnant wife, struggling to even think of anything else.........??

I have mine with me - I use it as a range finder & scorecard, the Golf Shot app is a great tool to have. Never played in a comp and would have no issues turning it off for that as I understand its a breach. But I would only ever use it on a call for emergencies, it can be quite off putting if someone is talking loudly while trying to play.

I always leave my mobile in the car but I was glad that one of my playing partners had his on him as pa in law suffered a heart attack in the group behind us. We were able to call for a buggy from the pro shop and eventually get him to hospital. That was after he had driven himself home first! Triple by pass later he is now getting back to full fitness.

Mobile phones on the course do not bother me at all. I personally do not use mine but i could not care less if anybody wanted to use theirs.

Don't mind em,got mine with me in my bag on vibrate,HID knows not to call me anyway.
If you are carrying a phone just be ready to play when it's your turn and don't chat while someone is taking a shot, simples.

Maybe you should be at work then.

If your phone rings while I am playing with you, your work will be interrupted while you get rushed to hospital to have my sand wedge removed.

Ethan keep your bravado away from the keyboard.

I am usually 100% in the no mobile during play camp. However as a caveat, my mum is seriously ill in hospital at the moment and so my phone will definitely be on at Woburn in case the her condition worsens or the unthinkable happens. If you don't like that then tough and I make no apologies in this one case for doing so. Any other time and I'm with the the OP and think they should be used for emergencies only and texting, surfing etc is a big no no when playing particularly in a comp

Mate, I believe that you're playing with me at Woburn. Any time that phone rings, you answer it. No questions asked. I'll even stand next to you looking menacing if anybody feels like complaining.

My phone will be swiched off and in the bag, you never know when a phone may be needed...
