The same as we survived before GPS, rangefinders, highly engineered golf balls, motorised trolleys, cars, etc, etc. The industrial revolution must really have come as a shock to you.
Advances in technology are not always a bad thing, as long as the berk operating the technology is also advanced enough to know how to use it without upsetting anyone. Blame the berk, not the phone.

Having lost a few very close familly to cancer myself, I feel I can comment on this piece of crassness.
Terminally ill people don't just die within a convenient timescale. Like a week. So you can put all your social and work commitments on hold, and sit in a chair holding their hand. No, it's not that simple. They can drag it out for months, some times years. Visiting them every day is pretty stressful, how ever much you love them, and you do need time away. Time to do your own thing. Time out shall we say, and may be, dare I say it, a bit of golf?

I am on call 24/7 for 1 week in every 4. I keep the phone on and in my bag during the round and inform my playing partners that the ring tone is low so I need to be right beside my bag to hear it. I also may check it every now and again. Have offered to go round on my own but they all seem happy enough and have no problems with it.

I really dont see the problem in mobiles aslong as someone isnt chatting away on it. Texting doesnt make a noise and the stupid rule saying it cant be used as a gps device in some comps is a load of old tosh. I cant afford a rangefinder or skycaddie so i use an app on my phone that cost me bugger all and i will continue to use it!

I don't see the problem with having a mobile on the course provided they are not used excessively nor are they used as aids to improve your game (which is contra-the-laws anyway).
Sometimes when I go and play golf my wife might text me mid-round to ask what time I'm expecting to finish. Provided you're discreet and don't make phone calls every few minutes, what's the harm?
In today's age of busyness and limited free time, we should be doing everything we can to encourage people to play. If letting them accept a call here or there, or check an email now and again means they're encouraged to leave the office and play golf, it's surely a good thing.
Also, might be quite a good advertisement to young people - being able to 'check in' to golf courses and share via facebook, twitter, foursquare etc is a good recruitment tool for their peers.

so we (almost) all agreed that phones are not a problem. and now, just think about iPads - I've seen press conferences with political VIPs who were more interested in their fancy devices more than in questions... just imagine people fallowing news/stock exchange and so on in golf course...
Theres no place for mobiles on a golf course!!a few years back I was playing with a guy first time who constantly used he`s mobile,wouldnt play with him again.First we get members thinking its ok to play out of turn and now they are accepting mobiles on the course?whats happening to the gentlemans game?.

I've got a mate who's on his constantly during social golf, everytime you look at him he's texting. On occasions you have to even tell him its his shot he's that busy texting. I have to admit I find it a little ignorant at times.

I don't mind mobiles on a golf course as long as they are placed in a mobile phone holder on a cart, on silent an not attached to someones ear'ole.
We cannot stop technology moving forward but we can stop others interrupting the game with annoying ringtones, by chatting on the phone and not getting on with what they turned up to do, swing the bats
not trying to swing things off course, but I also dont mind singles playing a round listening to music on their phone/mp3 player. It came up in the clubhouse the other day as did mobile phone usage

I had the same I had to tell this bloke I played with it was he`s turn to play whilst he`s busy texting??.......CANT PEOPLE RELAX AND LIVE WITHOUT THEIR MOBILE PHONES FOR 4+ HOURS ON A GOLF COURSE!! who remembers I believe the 07 Open Championship when mobiles at the event were completely out of control and changed the laws on mobiles use at future Opens. I`m not anti mobile phones as I have one myself but people seem to think their bloody mobile is their life support system :angry: . RANT OVER.

Im with you on that I've had similar and I cant be doing with stupid ring tones and beeps when your are trying to play. ! - the odd text is fine but people taking or making phone calls and holding play up is a no no - its just rude. Cant anyone get away for a few hours, yes I know there are exceptions but how did we manage without them? I think any ring tone during the round should incurr a 1 shot penalty! If you are so insecure that you can't bear to be away from facebook or twitter PUT THEM ON QUIET IN YOUR BAG then get yourself a life.
I put up with being available all week I'm not interested when i'm playing golf!

I agree about not using them, but they don't necessarily have to be off. My grandad had a heart attack a few years ago whilst playing with me and my uncle. Luckily my phone was on in my bag albeit on silent. My phone was a brick back then would of taken 4/5 mins to boot up

I personal dont have an issue with people having there phone on the course, as long as they are not being anti social and its not slowing everyone elses game down!! dont agree with taking calls and replying to messages! I Do carry my phone but use it for the golf shot app!! its very good for tracking club distances and working like a min skycaddy with your distances!! plus i use it to keep track of my score cards!!! Plus it syncs all the local course in the area!

Why is golf more important than any other activity in life when you have a phone with you? If you go shopping with the wife do you turn your phone off? If you go to the pub with your mates do you turn your phone off? If you go to the football do you turn your phone off? All this "can't you survive 4 hours without your phone" nonsense could apply to any activity you do so why is golf so much more important? As long as the phone usage isn't being noisy or causing slow play then what right has anyone got to tell anyone else what is and isn't acceptable on the golf course? A good friend of mine is constantly using his mobile whilst on the course as he is a big gambler and needs to be checking scores as they happen and also needs to get a bet on as soon as possible when a price is released in order to get the best value. He won 10k a few weeks ago on a bet he placed while we were on the course because he spotted something about the odds. You might say if that's important why not just not bother with golf well I say the technology allows him to do both and I get to play a round with a mate so why not?

I refuse to let a mobile phone dictate my life.
If anyone thinks that they are so indispensable that they can't play a round of golf without constantly checking for messages, answering/making calls, then by all means play at a club where that behaviour is welcomed and where your playing partners don't mind. If you want to play at a club where they request that the use of mobiles on the course (except in emergencies) is discouraged then please respect their rules.

I actually find it quite sad that people can't go four hours of their life without their mobile phone. I can understand in the case Of Homer's Mum but texting mates, looking up football scores or even answering calls from work I just don't see the need.
Your mates will wait till you've finished, the football scores will still be there when you've finished and customers will still be there when you've finished. My old man worked for himself most of his life, he has never owned a mobile phone and it never did his business any harm. If I have to be on-call for work, I don't play golf and if I'm playing golf, I'm not at work.
If you're in a sitation such as Martin's I have no issue but if you just can't draw yourself away from the rest of your life for 4 hours then I feel sorry for you, I really do.
