Mizuno DNA Shaft optimiser

Your ss is around the same as mine was with a 6 iron, and I ended up with PX6.0.

Different shafts can feel different in different heads though in my (limited) experience so I'd pay for the fitting and hit all the combinations you can.

I went to the custom fit centre in Surrey. Well worth it. Swing speed was like yours. Best feel for me was dynalite XP s300 but hard stepped. DNA gave me the xp100's but they were to stiff(plus px6.0 and kbs tour). I get on better will a high launch shaft. Got MP59's. great clubs.

Isn't there a KBS Tour Stiff + shaft available? Not sure of the details but I know that I've hit the Stiff+ in some Cobra irons and they felt more "stable" than my usual tour stiff shafts.

The DNA system is flawed in my experience, it said my mate need regular shafts. He was off +3 and had just turned pro at the time. He and the club maker ignored the DNA and he ended up with a choice of X100 or KBS Tour X.

Just like Imurg My numbers were 85mph, 4, 2, 4, 4 and it kicked out S300, PX 5.5 or KBS stiff

it was between the s300 130g or the kbs tour stiff, project x didn't suit well, in the end i went for the kbs tour stiff as the dispersion was much tighter than the s300

i really enjoyed the experience and would certainly recamend it

I think the DNA is an OK device for narrowing choices down but if you are looking for a shaft to give specific flight characteristics you should get a decent fitter to give you a full fitting service. More shaft options available than most DG or AG stores (and many pro shops truth be told) and there will be something specific to match your swing and speed

Yes, and they can be fitted to any in-between flex too.

The C-taper plays stiffer, so most people drop down one sub flex, say from S+ in KBS to S in C-taper.

Personally, I'd be careful about 'hard' and 'soft' stepping.

If you google it and read through the many millions of discussions about it, there are probably as many people think there's something in it as there are as many people who think it makes no difference at all!

:whoo:

I'm 110% in that camp. I soft stepped my irons and saw hee haw difference on numbers or distance.

I thought the service at the national Fitting centres was free.It used to be.

At the fitting centres the DNA is just a starting point recommending 3 shafts. After that your just hitting balls on the range with the recommended shafts, with yourself and the fitter checking the trackman.

It should be reasonably clear which is the most suitable shaft during the process.

I wouldn't just go off the DNA stats, you really need to see the ball flight. Get yourself to the National fitting centre, you won't be dissapointed.

Of course the fact that some people thinks it makes no difference doesn't mean it does or doesn't. Millions of discussions? Really? Exaggerating slightly?

If you believe that the step pattern on TT DG has an effect on flex then it must follow that hard and soft stepping has an effect. For many players that effect may be small especially for players not at their limits of flex tolerance.

It's definitely £50 now, I was on the website earlier. For that you get the fitting, a mizuno golf shirt and some vouchers for a round at Burhill.
I think I'll make a day of it, fitting in the morning and get some mates from London to come and make up a 4ball for a round in the pm, then out for beers in the smoke.

I soft-stepped some Rifle 6.5s that had been soft-stepped before they were initially installed. While the initial install cut to correct lengths, I simply used the 3-iron shaft for 4-iron etc and left lengths as was - so all are now 1/2" over 'standard'.

They do feel softer. Whether that is down to the soft-stepping, the length or all in my head I neither know nor care. I would have preferred to have not been informed that the swing weights of the 2 I got a mate to do as a test are now a (quite) different swing weight than the rest. Sort of obecalp effect! :)

Having tested them before and after against my gamers, there may have been a small gain in length (maybe 5 or 6 yards) again could be length, flex or tosh. No discernible change in flight.

Thanks for the enlightenment MGL. I knew there was quite a price difference.

Back on topic - sort of. I forgot there were Stiff+. These could be worth considering too! Don't think the '+' was an option when I was selecting them.

Bit late in the day to be getting out of bed the wrong side isn't it?

I never said it either worked nor didn't work - I merely said there have been many (millions even) debates as to whether it does or doesn't.

Out of bed a long time, about to return, actually, but your rather vague point is undermined by the hyperbole of referring to millions of debates. I rather doubt there have even been thousands.

I do know quite a few people in the golf business who believe that stepping does what it is generally believed to do. I have never heard anyone say that it doesn't. Whether the average golfer needs it or not is a quite separate question, of course.

And the least you could do is tell us what you think is the correct answer.

My mate is going to the national fitting on Sat 9th Feb. I will try and report on his experience soon after.

I don't recall him saying that there was a fee. I went 2 years ago when it was at New Malden but the fitter really messed up on my testing and I ended up with Titleist AP2's. I have since bought a combi set of MP68 and MP58 in 6.0 project x and hit them fine despite being advised as regular at my fitting.

Surely if so much debate - and I've told him a million times "Don't exaggerate!" :D - there is doubt over a 'correct answer' so it would only be his opinion. I've certainly seen unresolved debate on other forums. Do the CPS numbers change? Significantly? Tom Wishon challenges the flight adjustment and he knows a thing or 2 about golf! Mine feel better than before, but I'm happy to forget/ignore/be ignorant of/not care why.

Well, he didn't even say whether he agrees or not, so his rather vague exaggerated statement is rather unhelpful.

The modern media technique is to set up debates suggesting they are finely balanced, with one proponent and one opponent. You see these arguments about climate change and stuff like that, even when the overwhelming majority opinion is on one side.

I have never heard one credible golf pro saying that soft stepping or hard stepping does not achieve the flex change intended. If MGL can point me to even a few references that do, I will happily read them.
