Mini driver v 3 wood?

Still one of my biggest conundrums regarding bag setup. I love the Mini Driver off the tee, but as others have said I much prefer my i25 3-wood from the deck and still get good distance off the tee with it.

I find the Mini can be a bit unpredictable from tight lies due to the big deep face, whereas I can launch my 3w from just about anywhere.

I think this debate as been on the forum before. Basically the mini-driver is a superb alternative for the driver. As pointed out in an earlier comment, in the right hands it can be used as an awesome, accurate driver. The first time I used one, I just kept nailing drives down the range and you could really feel the forgiveness. Strange ball flight though: 2/3 into the flight the ball takes off again going higher - weird but straight.

However, if you are consistent with your driver and can use a 3W off the deck it kind of has no place in the bag. The 12 degree version is a b&*ch to use off the deck.

Morning

I've used the 14 SLDR mini last year and currently use the 12Deg Aeroburner Mini. I don't use a normal driver so this is it for me.

Both excellent off the tee... ABM is lighter than the SLDR and I find much much easier to hit off the deck. I've also got slightly more length with ABM.

Haven't tried the Mini Drivers but have the i25 3 wood aswell and would be surprised if there's anything materially longer than it off the tee.

Easy to hit off the deck too, first time I've had a 3 wood for a while and very happy with it.

I probably knock my Mini about 10-15 yards further off the tee, but nothing in it from the deck and the i25 flies higher.

There are many players out there who have no business hitting a 3w off the deck, but like to use it from the tee. For those players the mini driver is easier to hit from the tee than a normal 3w due to the bigger head.
Others don't like modern drivers at all, that's your other potential market.

If neither of those is you then you're probably better off with a 3w.

I was considering a mini driver a short while ago. Instead I had a lesson on hitting a 3w and also got fitted for a new Titleist 3w, couldn't be happier now and mini driver no longer on my radar.

Sounds advice Stuey, I actually hit my 3 wood well off the deck but have rarely tried it off a tee, preferring to use my driver or rescue club. I would like a little more distance and ease of hitting off the tee than my current set up gives when accuracy is paramount but want to compromise as little as possible on length

I can get the same sort of range from my "15*/3 wood" as I can with my "driver" (in fact I don't carry my driver anymore) so don't really see the point in having a "mini-driver" although I have demo'd a "14* SLDR mini-driver" and it didn't go well to say the least !...

I have gone for the AeroBurner mini 16 degree to replace my 3 wood. I would only very rarely use a 3 wood off the deck as the extra distance gained over my RBZ hybrid off the deck is so minimal it's not worth the risk. The AeroBurner Mini is a delight to use, so light and the ball just soars when you put a good swing on it.
After years of hitting 460cc drivers, I lost a bit of confidence hitting a 3 wood off the tee, the head just looks so small, but the mini solves that problem. At 16 degree it is much straighter than my driver and of course around 30 yards shorter. I am glad I bought it.

Really liking the pictures of the Bertha Mini 1.5

Hopefully someone on here will get one after it comes out in 10 days and let us know how it handles

Today's news is

I've bought the Aeroburner Mini Driver 14 degrees. AG price matched and have a money back guarantee if you don't like it. I took it to the range and just absolutely nutted it off the tee and it seems it'll do a job off the deck. It'll get an outing in the vets league match tomorrow morning in place of my 3 wood - let's hope I don't need the warranty by Thursday

I have to say that, off the tee, I have rarely tried a club that's so easy to hit, it's regular shafted but I got a great flight with a fairly fast swing and it did go miles.

I've recently bought an aero burner mini 14. It's a great club so far. I have 4 tricky holes at my club where if you don't hit a good drive you will carry into the ditch. Now I can hit this and I no I will be safe for the second shot. It's also great of the deck. A big thumbs up for me.

Tried mine in a match today. It was longer off the tee than I expected but I hit a couple of poor drives as well, I only hit it once off the deck and the strike was good but sadly it clipped a tree. Definitely a club that stays in the bag and I just learn its characteristics
