Hi all,

I have been asking myself the same question over and over again HOW LONG DO YOU NEED TO BE PLAYING TO SCORE RESPECTABLY?

I know there are other questions that come out of this such as:

Ability
How often you practice
mentality
etc etc etc etc

As i have posed this question today i have just broken 90 and have been playing for 13 months well chuffed

Comments please

helloo.
interesting question, not that i know the answer as ive been playing 4 months only.
i mostly play a 12 hole course 1 maybe twice a wk.its a par 44 and my best is. 60 and get pretty close most days.
played 18 holes 3 times and best of 102 but i do think just remembering the course better would put me in high 90s as i forget the bunkers and nasty places round the corners.
i would be pleased tho if in a yrs time i break 90 as you have done so good stuff.

I think a lot of 'non golfers' think they could go round a course in less than 100. In reality breaking 100 is quite an achievement. I would consider less than 100 a respectable score and after that I think your target shot be set in blocks of 5 (100 THEN 95 THEN 90 AND SO ON)

a while back i watched an episode of personal lessons on golf channel and this american guy had been playing 20 yrs and couldnt break 100.
obviously he hadnt mastered the game in this time but i was impressed that he still had the enthusiasm to even carry on playing.

Well, under 90 is good for 13 months! Well done to you.
I set myself the challenge to play respectably (at first) and this was described to me as "being able to get round without serious embarrassment" and a decent enough game to play anywhere.

I think in any-one's book this is under 100 and probably judged best by "do I have a chance of making par?" "Can i hit it fairly straight?" "can I putt OK?" these types of questions.

I have played some nice games with some pretty poor players, one can rack up 12 bogeys and 6 doubles and not be utterly rubbish....if you catch my drift. But lost balls every hole and slow play gets rather tiring.....

90 is plenty respectable, could you do it on a course with 200 yd carries to the fairway and gorse all over the place.....? if so, you've passed by a mile!!!!

Good job, I bet it felt good!.....almost as good as 75!!...iirc :D

It's all in the head guy's. Golf that is. We aren't professionals and dont play 24/7 The Pro's know nothing else that's all they do that's why they can make a ball talk. Well almost. I have taken a yearout from work and went from playing off 4 and now I'm playing off 2. The more we play the better we become. On the other hand, there is just some people that will never be able to play golf no matter how long of how hard they try. I play every saturday with a guy who plays of a handicap of 28, he says if he ever break's 100 he will buy us drink all day. So we're hoping he breaks 100 before he retires. I personally dont think he ever will. He is a prime example of a golfer, loads of money loads of time to play and all the best of gear but he hasn't got the skill.

We all have our own ideas of what's 'respectable' and how quickly we want to get there. As a woman playing mostly with men, 28 handicap was my first target, but it took me a lot longer than 13 months!
Well done for breaking 90. Idea of going down in fives is good, but don't get discouraged if you 'stick' for a while, especially in the winter. The thing is to see why you're not making your targets (short game, long game?) and do something about it. Sadly my problem right now is the mind game - (send for the men in white coats?)
cheers

Respectable is what you make of it Mowgli and your perception will change as your level of ability progresses. As long as your not worried what others think is the main thing. One person's good score is another persons bad and likewise.

My definition of acceptable is buffer - anything above - unacceptable but that's just me.
