Might be a bold sweeping statement, and not one that many on here for whatever reason would want to hear, But.

Me and Missis Tash have just been up to his main Shirebrook depot on the edge of the Notts and Derbyshire border. Went into his Maxx brands shop which is a ripoff/copy of TK Maxx. A couple of years ago it was Rammel with a capital R. So in a couple of years how the hell does he get Stone Island, Versace, and every other brand in between down to the dregs like Dunlop. It is unbelieveable. Now that last bit I could of posted in OOB. But this is why it's in " The Lounge".

As me and Missis T pulled up he has opened another 3 or 4 shops, and shops undersells it. They are American Mall sized shops. One, for those that have overactive Knives and forks ( Big and Large uns). Triathlon sporty types shop ( TRUIK) . Equestrian, fishing etc is another. And finally a Mahoosive bloody great big Golf shop called PRO 18 DIRECT GOLF. Once more it is big. Now when I saw it I thought " that's a lot of Dunlop and Slazenger". No and flippin ECK no. Galvin Green, Oscar Jacobsen, Lacoste, FJ, Puma, Adidas, UA, the list goes on re clothing. Golf clubs, Titliest, Callaway, Wilson staff, in fact I cannot remember them all. All I could remember was that there was no Ping. Lovely massive putting green for most putters inc Scotty Cameron, odyssey and Wilson staff. Plus two simulators. He has a PGA pro to give lessons and fittings. They will price match with most companies except internet companies. The place is just massive and spacious not like his high street shops.

Had a natter with the guy that is running the shop, he said " we had a soft opening/ launch two weeks ago"."Didn't want to pay a fortune for a pro to come along for the day to open it ". They are relying on golfers to spread the word, and they/I will/have. I also softly mentioned about Mr Ashley's interest in American golf. He said " it's no suprise he has been after it for some time". He also mentioned that Ashley is serious about his venture into golf, he does not want to be seen as aiming at the cheap end of golf ie slazenger/Dunlop, he has persuaded the like of Galvin Green etc ( who will not be price beaten only matched, his words not mine),that he is serious about golf.

If and this is a massive if. If Ashley gets to buy American Golf and is able to turn them shops into what he has showcased at his Shirbrook HQ. It is gonna bog off quite a lot of people in the trade, but for us golfers it could be massive.

Me, if I was someone at Golf Monthly, I would jump in me car and have a quiet drive up to Shirebrook to see if Ashley's revolution is here to stay. Don't forget you heard it first off Tashyboy first.

Discuss if you wish.

Thanks Tash, interesting development that could lead to a change in the market if this is just the first of a chain of such mega stores and has deals with major brands. Sounds like it might be worth a trip...

You've described a golf shop. Where exactly is the 'revolution' in all of this?
Don't think he has opened the biggest golf shop in the middle of no where for nothing. I have been in every club shop on a course I have been to and golf shops everywhere I have been. This is on a scale probably only seen in the USA.

If you take Missis SG, it could cost you a few quid extra going in the other shops. 😳

If Ashley really wanted to have a chain of shops with all the top golf equipment in it then all he needed to do was stock all the DG shops he took over or fill the Sports Direct Shops with the Top OEM

I suspect this will be one big outlet shop in an area where AG aren’t around and will try and maximise it but Notts/Derby area is not a real hot bed of golfers to try and grab attention

And he has already lost the battle for AG - it’s already been shown that it’s impossible for two big country wide retailers when DG ran into issues and even AG on its own ran into issues so I will be amazed if he opens up stores around the UK

Could well be right phil. But theres not a lot of money in the sheep cuddling area of Notts and Derby's. So why do it. Same with his large and Tall shop. Whats that all about.

Don’t agree with that Phil.

We have a lot of good golfers, especially Notts (was told anecdotally that Hollinwell has over 40 scratch or better players). Several successful tour players hail from the area...and what’s more, there’s me!!

We have the players but other than Mansfield area (and Kedleston) we don’t have many top quality courses. But we all want to buy the best equipment cheaply.[/QUOTE]

It's 10 minutes off the M1 - hardly in the middle of nowhere.

Come down to Silvermere, the shop is huge and has more branded clothes, clubs, shoes and accessories than you've ever heard of, 50 bay range all with top tracer, putting green, short game area, 20+ teaching pros, decent enough 18 hole course, restaurant and bar. And no Mike Ashley in site.

I'll buy the beer.

That's what I am trying to say Mr Devil, am sure the London area can more than support that set up. but Mansfield area. That's a shop punching above its rate. Why?

Because its close to the M1. People will easily travel an hour for specialist stores for their hobby. That brings in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Stoke, Lincoln, Leeds etc etc. The rent will be cheap.

Ashley is a lot of things but isn't an idiot when it comes to retail business.

Setup looks very good - just be happy you've got it on the doorstep!
