Club v country has always been a tough balancing act. Personally I'd like more give and take on both sides. Why not have a bigger squad call up for friendlies and get the clubs to release the top players so Hodgson can work on stuff with the "first XI" and then use these games to blood more youngsters along with those more senior players the clubs are happy to allow play. Would seem an ideal way for England to have some proper training time during the season, we follow the German and Spanish example of giving the upcoming players a taste of international football and players aren't pulling out or returning injured.

Of course for qualifiers, the clubs then have to repay the debt for not using their players by ensuring they are released for these (unless genuinely injured). It's a utopian dream but surely there's enough basis of win win for the PL, FA and the clubs to all sit down and begin discussions. Surely it's the only way England will have a side of fit, not over played, footballers along with a number of new and emerging players already blooded in internationals and who can then be fed into the squad/side to improve and develop England over the next few years. Seems oh so simple doesn't it
