First off I must admit I've not watched the programme.

Tonight he appeared on the LFC channel giving his side of the tale. Not sure why? The man has lost all relevance to Liverpool Football Club in my opinion.
He was brilliant for us, the amount of games he won on his own was incredible. The '01 cup final being his finest hour in a red shirt.
But, with Houllier taking us in a different direction, I think he was seen as a replacement for Fowler and that was never going to be easy. Owen never got the accolade he deserved, I don't know whether this is a contributing factor in him leaving or not resigning a new contract, but he went to Madrid, who could blame him?
Newcastle was a funny one, there were rumours of him holding out and lpool coming in for him last minute but it never materalised and he went there.
Now, none of this would stop us in a few years looking fondly on him until....

Well you know the rest, he doesn't exist for many reds, and will never be accepted by fans at Anfield again.

Thoughts?

His first strike was when he refused to sign a new contract and give Rafa a season

Second strike was when he could have resigned if he told Madrid to deal with us but went to Newcastle

The third and final strike was pulling on that shirt for them ! And then spouting rubbish

He was never one connected to the fans - he was great for us but even towards the end he was always favouring England over his club

Did you watch it Phil? If so, how did the whole thing come across?

and it wasn't all his fault connecting with fans, I went to games where he'd score and not even get a mention of a song off the kop.

All that interested Owen was playing for England. If he wasn't supposedly 100% fit he wouldn't play at club level, but totally a different story at international level.
One word sums up Owen ""
He was a disgrace at Newcastle took them for all he could and NEVER gave anything back.
Can't stand the bloke.....

Nah won't bother watching because it's him

I know he has spoken to the red tops and was suggesting that he begged to join us back again in 2009 ! But Rafa turned him down hence why he joined them

That's dreadful, how could he?

Call himself an Englishman? Pfft!

(And then we wonder why England are so crap)

The club paid his wages - that's where his priority should have been

When at Newcastle he always managed to be fit to play for England but not for his club who spent millions on him

Your first priority should always be to the people that pay your wages

Mind you that argument can be laid at an awful lot of players doors over the years, not just Owen

I disagree.

But if you're going down that route then the club's priority should be to see that their capable players perform for their country.

It's the old club v country argument. Funny how when its a friendly the club finds their top players pulled a muscle the weekend before. It seems many only want their players to play qualifiers and finals these days and the problem won't go away

Maybe I'm just harking back to the time before football became a big money making machine.

(I don't even know why I'm posting on a football thread  Is there a filter that stops football posts coming up when you do the "New Posts" search??)

Club fans pay to see their players play for their club

Owen earned over £20mil from Newcastle and hardly played for them

The clubs priority should be to themselves and the fans that keep the club alive.

Always your country first, always has been always will be and this thread can go on for 100 pages and I won't accept otherwise. Players are like prostitutes, they'll go with whoever pay them the most, they'll kiss the badge until they go somewhere else and then kiss that badge, but, playing for your country is the biggest honour and that comes first.

Agreed. I'm not really a Owen fan but of course country should come first.
& yes Owen is a shocking pundit.

I will always argue that club comes first. They are the ones that pay the players £5m+ a year, even more on coaching, dietary consultants etc etc, plus on top of that they might have paid £25m to sign him. So a team that has got a player that is going to cost them in excess of £50m during his 5 year contract is meant to accept that country comes first?

With you on that 100%

The club that pay his wages - the fans that help pay his wages - thats where his priority should always be.
