Medal or Stableford

Medal for all the reasons stated, just wish people would get it in their head that they can pick up for the hole if they're not posting a winning/qualifying score and just post NR. Many people don't realise that handicap calculation works out exactly the same as stableford and that they can post an NR without any actual consequences (its not even an automatic +.1, just like a blob in stableford).

I think it depends a lot on your perspective and what your aim is.
Up to a point, it could be argued that those looking to win should play Medal, those looking to lower their handicap should play Stableford.
I'll happily play either as I'm out there to play.
What does grind my gears a little about Medal is standing around watching people take 3 putts from 10 feet for a 9 on a par 3 after doing the same on 3 or 4 other holes - that just saps the life out of me.
Yes, people can NR a hole and move on but, generally, they don't.
It's "ball in the hole" golf so that's how it's going to be.....That's why Medal can take weeks for a round.
High handicappers are, generally, such because they throw in a few high numbers, sometimes more..
Stableford is a much better format for them as it keeps the game moving when those bad holes occur.
Handicaps are based on Stableford anyway

Other things I hate about medal:

You hit a good shot off the tee, go to find your ball 280 yards down the fairway...no where to be found, 5 minute search and still not about.

Now have to trudge back all the way to the tee. Not practical at all, in stableford you can just write off the hole.

In medal you can too.......

You can, but how many do.........
I bet if you look at all scores entered there will be a significant number of 9's, 10's or more...

I totally agree

Not enough......that's for sure

But by same token
I've seen stableford cards, 9 for 7 for 0 points
Why.....??
Why aren't these people picking up here too...??

Ignorance at times
Lack of knowledge
Or maybe just, I've paid my money, I will do what I want

Maybe I don't understand

What happens to your end score if you don't hole out every hole?

It goes in as NR and your name goes at the bottom of the results sheet just above the DQs, in terms of handicap it gets the clause 19 stableford adjustment (lowest score that would give you 0 stableford points) and is processed as normal.

Thanks that is what i thought.

That would be crap if you were doing well and looking to be in the money.

Of course you would turn round to the tee box and hit another off the tee.

I prefer a medal right up until playing badly. Then I wish it was stableford. Sadly, there's been a greater need for stableford lately.

Your card is still screwed then. In Stableford it is just a 0, you play the next hole and you are still in the game. Less sole destroying.

Medal is always the best of the two. I do prefer stableford but if I'm playing exceptionally well it's gross score every time.

I think the best competition format is match play, esp 4ball betterball.

You can win a stableford with a rubbish score or be way off the pace with a PB. Your result in the competition is based on the scores of people who played at totally different times of the day and you may never have looked in the eye.

Has to be medal play for me too. The purest form of golf as I see it. We only have one stableford medal a year the rest are strokeplay.
That said our Saturday sweep is stableford
