Medal or Stableford

Saying that, we play medals all through the winter, which I think is wrong, as soon as balls start getting lost in the fairway comps should be stablefords.

We stop medals after the October one and our Masters event, and resort to stablefords until March. Not 100% happy with the decision but as long as we can get out and play does it matter

We hardly play any stableford comps.

I try and treat medals as a stableford, as that is how your handicap is calculated. I don't really care about winning the medal comps, I just want to improve my handicap. Fortunately I've been lucky to win a few comps.

prefer stableford, tends to be faster & less tense but i am not adament.
at our club it's 95% stableford (club championship is only medal).
with my society we play 75% stableford, 25% medal (medal once every two weeks)

If the new rule changes get put through, then medals may effectively become stableford :ears::clap:

New alternative form of stroke play: The Rules recognize a new “Maximum Score” form of stroke play, where your score for a hole is capped at a maximum (such as double par or triple bogey) set by the Committee, so that you can pick up and move to the next hole when your score will be at or above the maximum.

Yep the way it should be for amateurs.

This is why round take 4 hours + when hackers are taking 10 strokes+ on holes. It should be pick up once you go beyond a set number of shots relative to handicap for that hole.

I suppose it does could down to the number of shots. But you could be score bad on a hole where you get a shot and score good at a hole where you don't get it. So you could shoot 36 points but still be over (over handicap).

I think you have good medal players and good stableford players - I think the high handicappers prefer stableford - because the par isn't 4 it might be 5 or 6 - so it takes the pressure off.

I prefer medal personally - its a truer test of your ability over 18 holes.
