McIlroy out!

I love his optimism about getting back. Either it isn't as serious as it's reported or he's not been told howl long term that sort of injury is and I can't see him at the Open or the USPGA. I wonder if he'll be back this season at all.

Agreed Homer, if it's a full rupture given that it's on the left ankle, a return anytime soon would be amazing. Rory/Nike may well have to take the hit(no pun) and play the long game (again no pun)
With his speed of swing and pressure on that side during his swing, a rush back is not the smart move for the long term
I was so looking fwd to see him peg it up with Tiger, Tom, Jack and the other champs on the Wed.
Gutted for him too.

All will be revealed within the next 48 hrs when he has follow up scans. Having had the same injury he will now always be prone to "wapping over" until said ligament is pinned.
short term though the swelling needs to be got rid of and the ankle can then be strapped/fixed to stop over rotation, and looking at his swing that is a very distinct possibility. Can he play, possibly. To what extent, ?????????.?
the pain he could be goin through would/will be immense during the four days.
no one has yet mentioned the pressure he could be put under from his (Nike) sponsor to play. With Woods smacking the ball left right and centre at the mo. Rory is there shining star and Nike won't be happy at the current situation.
good luck Rory me man.

If I were as fit, young, strong and talented as him I'd do everything I could to play. He will get the best medical treatment in the world, and heal quickly, and they'll fix him up well with the necessary medicine and supports to minimise pain.

(if I were his dad, I'd tell him to forget about golf, and only return when he is 100% better, and ready to come back stronger and better than before!)

It's being reported that he's waiting on results of a scan..... So why did he say it was a, "total rupture" if he hasn't seen the results of the scan. I have a gut feeling it's just a wee strain.
I hope you are right - we should know later today. I assume it is a 2nd scan today (after initial swelling has reduced).

There was a sports physio who has treated Andy Murray for similar injuries on the news last night. He said there was no chance Rory would be playing the Open and would likely be out for at least 12 weeks. He was basing that on it being a rupture as initially reported.

Even if it is only a strain it would seem foolish for Rory to rush back to golf and risk doing even further damage. As for Nike putting him under pressure to play the Open, I don't think they're that stupid to force him to do something which could have a serious long term impact.

I'm in the he was stupid to be playing football camp. It's a sport with a high rate of injury and he's mid major season.
He was unlucky, obviously, but why put yourself in harms way.

Yep, no surprise at all...

"After much consideration, I have decided not to play in the Open Championship at St. Andrews. I’m taking a long term view of this injury and, although rehab is progressing well, I want to come back to tournament play when I feel 100% healthy and 100% competitive. Thank you for all your support and best wishes. I hope to be back on the course as soon as I can.... In the mean time, come on Andy!!!"

Anyone know who the lucky blighter is that gets his spot?

Not sure all spots are 100% confirmed yet I think there may still be a couple available for this weekends tournaments.

Edit: Russell Knox with Kevin streelman becoming 1st reserve .
