Matchplay Team Strategy

Looking for some assistance. The younger members of our club have a pairs betterball match against the club Saturday week, 8 matches.

I'm the team captain and am planning on pairing everyone up with their usual playing partner. How should I be sending them out though? Should I go out first as team captain? Should I put the low handicap pairings at the start/end/middle??

Not so much about lowest h'caps, its more about the best pairs - those that Ham & egg it well, games compliment each other etc.

When I was a team captain, I'd stick my best pairings out at the top, hide my worst ones in the middle and save a little steady Eddy pairing to go out last just in case you need that fall back point.

Of course, if some play like plonkers on the day, you might as well draw names from a hat!!

Low handicap players sometimes do not make good partners.
I would occasionally put a couple of guys who did not like each other together as that can work well sometimes.

It's BB so no real pressure as opposed to 4somes.
Bottom line is it really does not matter much at that level.
Steady eddies with the wild boys is the only real advice I would offer.

We're all mates within our team and everyone has a person in the group who they regularly play with, with the exception of a couple who I'll probably stick together in the middle of the pack.

Thinking about kicking off proceedings with myself and my partner as we're both pretty steady and finishing with our two pairings who are really solid golfers, 3 of which play off single figures and the other one is one of the biggest bandits the world has ever seen.

i always thought that it was customary for captain to lead off against oppossing captain in these friendly matches. That way your washed changed and in the bar first to buy all the team a well earned victory drink!

I'd have to remortgage my house to by a round of drinks at our place, prices are a joke....£4.30 for a bottle of cider, £4.40 for a pint of San Miguel. Sod that....I'll go out last!

Best advice I would give is to stick a solid steady low handicapper with an erratic player off about 18. You know the type that will have 8 pars 4 bogeys 4 doubles a triple and a quadruple on his card. Really difficult to play against when he is making pars on shot holes.
