Money List Winner
OK today was the winter matchplay league final round. My team is bottom of the league even though a few of us have not lost yet (including myself). I have ground out 4 halves and won twice.
Today was one of those wins but it caused my teams assistant captain to be a little annoyed at me. The captain himself didnt say anything to me and seemed to sit on the fence on what I chose to do.
I set off in one of two singles matches (team of 6 players, two singles play together, after an american greensomes and a 4BBB). I started strong with four pars on the trot to go 4 up. We then halved three of the next 4 and I lost one so sat 3 up going onto the 9th.
After teeing off on the 8th my playing partner told me he had hurt his shoulder drilling a drive. I told him to let me know if it was bothering him. He hit a thin but good 2nd shot and we halved the hole in 5s after I had to chip out a bunker as I drove it under the lip.
He was then in obvious pain on and around the green but could still play OK.
On the next tee he duffed a drive and then thinned another shot. At this point he said he could not go on.
I talked to him for a minute and said as he still had two shots owed so I suggested a score of 1-up, which to me would be fair as it was becoming a close match. He agreed and we recorded that.
I was playing with the organiser and I checked with him before agreeing that it was OK, he did not say we could not do this but also didnt confirm that there was a rule on it.
It turns out there was some rule that says the match should be recorded as a walkover (player does not turn up or does not complete the match). The guy did turn up, did not give up easily and I believe the guy did complete the match as I won it one up after 9 and we called an end to it there! A fair and just result I think as the match had become pretty close.
I think it is also fair as I have played in other games in the league where after 4-6 holes my opponent and the other singles game with us have walked in with halves on really rainy cold days, I would happily have carried on but there would have been little quality golf! I think this guy deserves more than a walkover when the above has happened and the guy I was playing got a half!
So should I have played by the rulebook even though there is not an exact rule but only an interpretation of what constitutes a walkover.
Sorry for the long post but it needed fully explaining, so I ask, what would you have done and did you think what I did was right?
PS We still got the most points of any team that day and won £20 in vouchers.
