Which do you prefer and why ?

I like the masters but it's the Open any day for me. Golf in it's purest form, without the get-in-da-hole and you-d-man brigade !

Totally agree but to be fair the Masters isn't too bad for the idiots shouting as its pretty well marshalled. The Open though is played on testing courses and has a certain historic aura about it. Even the name of the trophy is known around the world.

The Open is the bigger and better tournament.

However for TV viewing, has to be the Masters, it's nightime for us, sit back and relax with a few beers, and Augusta looks superb on telly, whereas any links course always looks flat and featureless.

I choose THE Open every time. (The one here, not the US Open).

The Masters is a very peculiar event. The course is "odd", the premium on putting is silly and the fairways are stupidly wide.

At the Open, the world gets to play and watch golf as it should be (and this coming from a parkland player!).
Proper fairways and rough. Proper greens and bunkers. Wind and rain etc.

I must say the course for the US Open this year looked a beaut (ignoring the disastrous conditions).

I have played it on a TWs game and it was such a shame to see it looking so wrecked.......

I agree, if you could somehow combine the Augusta course which is the prettiest and most visualy stunning course i've ever seen, with The Open's prestige and crowds then you would have THE perfect tournement!

I'm not a links fan, so would choose the Masters, just far better to watch.

Of course, would always be better if we could exterminate the yanks and install a European audience.

The Masters is the better watch but the Open is the better Championship. As has been said, sometimes on a links course you just can't tell where the hole goes from the tv coverage but Augusta - or even the other non-links Major venues - you can see where and why the players are going a particular way.

Great the watch the Masters it always signals the start of the season to me.

But it's got to be the Open. True Golf.

As Doh has stated the Masters always feels good as it is the start of the season, but it is the Open every time for me Links golf on rock hard fairways beautiful and tough.

I have to say that IMO before they started messing with the length at Augusta (maybe 15yrs ago) it was a much better tournament and almost gave the Open a run for its money.

It depends if your american or British/European. The masters is designed specifically for television and the open is well usually very open with fairways and greens that nearly all seem to be one. I think the open is the only place you could hit a 400 yard drive on one hole and 150 yard drive on the next.

Open for me love links golf.

Definately the Masters, purely for this reason.

I've had months without any golf. Not played during the icy cold months, not seen anything on tele ( I have no Sky etc ).

Then suddenly this beautiful tournament appears with the worlds best players showing how great the game can be.

Fair gets my juices flowing.

It's like having a packet of donuts. You haven't had a donut all week, so that first one tastes teriffic. But by the time you get to the 4th one, you've had that initial rush, and it's all a bit samey.

The Open is just another donut. ( I say that, but if Casey is in with a shout over the final 9 holes, I'll be 'gedinthehole'ing with the best of them :o)

I think they call it the law of diminishing returns, or something.
