For the smudging issue the key is to do the night before at least, gives the solvent enough time to evaporate and the marking lasts longer.
I have marked up on the first tee and had the smudge issue but not when done a few days before.
It’s the method, not the pens.

I've tried marking my balls in advance but still get the smudging issue. Off to try my latest purchase now, watch this space.........

Sounds like maybe the marker isn't the problem, perhaps it's your technique? Why don't you post a video on here there are plenty of experts to offer a critical assessment. You have to put the practice in too.

I have recently been marking a line on my ball to assist with putting but find that the line often gets smudged after the ball has been hit a few times, I find this really annoying. I've used Sharpies and tried other (cheap) brands as well. Can anyone recommend a brand of marker pen that doesn't smudge over time? The problem is I have never been fitted for a marker pen nor had a lesson with my pro about how to mark the line
Use a sharpie to mark the point on the ground, maybe 2 inches in front of your ball, that you need to roll it over to make your putt.
Once you've hit your putt, who cares if it smudges, you are highly unlikely to need marked spot again.

Maybe go a step further: carry a ruler then you can mark a line from your ball to the hole*
*only works on straight putts.

I think a lot depends on where you buy the sharpie from. Some retailers will sell you the Sharpie that they make the most money from, you need an indipendent Sharpie fitter and make sure all the data from your fitting is available via Sharpieman or similar
There are Sharpie fitting sceptics out there, but there is no doubt that getting fitted gives you the best chance of getting the line neat and straight. Everybodys fingers are different. Everybodys dexterity is different. Thinking that just picking up any sharpie that comes to hand will enable you draw your best line is ludicrous. Get fitted. And not just one of the Sharpie fitters in WH Smiths or one of the big chains. You need to go to a specialist who really spends the time and can help improve how you hold the sharpie as well. Its expensive maybe, and just because you wont see any benefits doesnt mean it isnt worth it.

Hate to see advise like this. For most of us our games are absolutely dependant on being able to blame equipment???

My advice would be to give those run of the mill club pro's a miss and find yourself one who concentrates on pro golfers. It might cost you a bit more, and it could be difficult to locate one, but it will be worth it.
Down to scratch in no time.

I think it’s cheating to line your ball.
You can’t put a sharpie line on your clubface or can you.
It should be banned.
It’s about time the powers that be put a stop to this . The slowest player I ever played with spent most of the wasted time lining his ball up on the green.
I think he was fitted for a sharpie and put the training to good use.
Seriously though these lines put me off on the iron shots when they are not lined up on fairways / bunkers etc.

Does it matter ? OF COURSE it matters, the viscosity of the ink is absolutely critical, too viscous and you have a career threatening issue, black is the ONLY way to go.

I mustn’t be outlawed! Using a line on the ball (Callaway provide one on the Supersoft) revolutionised my putting … I went up from dire to distinctly average.
