Show me absolute proof that custom fitting is of benefit to the "improving" golfer ?
How in gods name do you custom fit an inconsistent swing thats arguably going to change/improve over a period of weeks/months/years,or should you be custom fitted every other week ?
Why pick an exception to the rule to try to prove a point? This demographic will account for a very small percentage of golfers.

Your point is essentially correct, but any custom fitter worth his salt - if the fittee tells him honestly he's a new player/taking lessons - will tell said fittee that the fit is for his game as it is now, and not how good a player he may end up.

But then again that's no different from a new player buying a starter set, would you advocate a new player buying a set of MP69s because he may improve enough to play with them eventually?

Ethan,
If custom fitting was of any benefit to me,i'd be fitted tomorrow (friends in the business),so i'm not being awkward and disagreeing with custom fitting just for the sake of it,i'm telling you what i've witnessed with my own eyes, custom fitting alonewill not improve your golf game/scores.
Now,could you answer a couple of questions please ?
Not all custom fitting is free,so what is the customer paying for,if his game doesn't improve ?
What is your Handicap ?
What qualifies you to answer so many questions related to custom fitting and golf equipment/shafts (not being argumentative here,i'm just curious) ?
Why did you highlight/correct my grammar ?

But how do you know whether CF would be of benefit to you if you haven't tried it? You have a set of clubs which are not the usual regular off the shelf items, yet you dispense advice to others not to do the same. Hypocrisy, no?

This debate is getting rather tiresome now. I have made a number of coherent arguments but you simply ignore them because your mind is made up and not open to reason, so instead of addressing them you turn to logical fallacies - first the appeal to authority (which you sort of repeat again here) and now the ad hominem attacks - questioning the qualifications of those who disagree with you. I note you haven't questioned the qualifications of anyone who has agreed with you.

I am not playing this game with you, so if you don't like what I have to say, just ignore it, as I will ignore you.

The grammar point - well, I thought you might at least learn one thing from this thread.

A large percentage of golfers will be able to play golf to a good standard with off the shelf clubs.
No fancy shafts or grinds or kick points or grips.
The small percentage will need a slight tweak to the lofts and lies or even a change in shaft but you wont know all that when you start.
My advice would be have your lessons first, get your posture and other basics sorted, THEN get custom fitted if you want the extra peace of mind

From a neutral point of view here, as a relative short arse 5ft 7" I always played off the shelf clubs and always with my irons hoiked it left. Had a pretty simple cutsom fit and got 2 degrees flat, still reg shaft and grips but not hit the irons straight.
Also had a driver custom fit and came away feeling let down a bit as I was expecting too much, as I know my flight caracteristics I kind of can fit myself for a driver, the plus was my dispersion was down which was good.
So you may not see the huge improvemnet that some people percieve custom fit will do for them but it's the little things in golf that make a good score.
BTW my swing although changed over the years still has the same traits it always has,my swing DNA I suppose (a 14 hcper!)

OK, fine.

So a member walks into your pro shop and says they want a new driver and point to the one they want. Do you sell it to them, or do you suggest some lessons instead first?

The CF part of it is a red herring, because for most of the big brands, it is a free service to the member, and the club is likely to be adjustable.

The underlying issue is lessons versus equipment, and the ethical difference between selling an off the shelf club and CFing one for a member who has a swing fault is a subtle one, if one exists at all.

Totally agree. A lot of it is number crunching nonsense. In reality the club always plays differently from a swing lab or trackman. I've just finished messing about with drivers on the practice area and settled on a G20 with a UST Mamiya Tour black 68g shaft which is a high launch low spin shaft. Totally different to my last trackman fitting but a much better ball flight and distance.

Custom fit has its place however from now on this bear is finished with custom fit mumbo jumbo nonsense and I'll do my own crude version and settle on what I'm happy with not what some computer says basing it on numbers in an indoor simulator.

One other thing. Mark Crossfield may be 'independent' in that he is not affiliated with any one manufacturer in particular, but that doesn't mean he is objective.

Every man and his dog in golf is offering CF these days, so that is a very crowded and competitive area which requires a lot of resource to really do well, so perhaps it is not surprising that Mark is more motivated to go another way to sell his apps, so a cynic might see a connection in him carving out a niche as a CF naysayer (albeit a watered down one, so he doesn't shut the door entirely).

CUSTOM FITTING IS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no smokescreen here, every time I try to fathom how you have come to have such far form ordinary clubs in your bag, you avoid the question, I would like an answer? First though, and not something I havn't alluded to before, I will again answer your question, so you can then answer mine!

As to what will a custom fitted player get for his FREE FITTING? Well, he'll have found the right head for his game, he'll have found the right shaft for his game, he'll have the correct grip for him, and he'll have had the lie and length adjusted to fit him and his swing, and not a guy who is 5'10" and swings it on a correct plane.

Will his game improve, and his scores? Who knows, but he will have given himself every chance, whereas poicking up a set of X flex blades like Rory plays, when you're a 15 handicapper, I think even someone as obstinate and contrary as you, can admit will not.

PISH !!
custom fitting is free if you agree to sign on the dotted line, and buy the fitters (brand) of club.An unbiased personal custom fitting is far from FREE.

Custom fitting is free.

rather than ask that, which part of what he says is incorrect? More to the point, what qualifies you to decry custom fitting?

Simple,i know numerous golfers who were custom fitted and didn't lower there handicap,or improve there game in general after being "fitted".These me old china, rae facts, not numbers on a launch monitor.

Honest reply, and nothing i can disagree with.

Ethan,it's appears that you are not qualified to answer these questions, your a shaft geek, and not qualified to give people advice.
I am giving my opinion, you are giving your opinion.
The grammar point ? well you are clearly trying to be patronising and condescending, you are obviously well educated, and i have only a handfull of GCE's,and an 'A' level in sociology.Thing is,judging from your post's,your no better than average on a golf course, even with your custom fitted bag.

Great advice, from somebody "qualified" to give such advice.

Enough with the bickering and petty arguments. If you dont like what someone has to say ignore it or them. If it is offensive then report it otherwise act like adults.
