Head Pro
Hindhead does a cross country event as well.
On New Years we have an annual Cross Country
The Pro sets out a course using various tees and greens
This year it was 6 Holes
8th Green to the 7th Green
7th Fairway to the 5th green
5th Fairway to the 6th Green
5th Fairway to the 4th Green
3rd Tee to the 1st Green
1st Fairway to the 9th Green
Involves going over lots of trees etc
We played that at my first club and it was known as Gruesomes.Aside from the cross country, we have a Boxing Day Yellowsomes, which is similar to greensomes, but your opponent's choose which of your two drive's you have to play. The onus is on them choosing the worst drive. Unfortunately, they don't have to do that, and a couple of years back one group agreed beforehand that they would play as greensomes, and select each others better ball, guess which team won the event .
It's a fun comp, but would be better if the Yellowsome format was changed so that there is no choice and you have to play the worst drive.
We have a competition called "Knightmare Pairs" - a Stableford competition which is holes 1-6 played as Greensomes, holes 7-12 played as Foursomes, and holes 13-18 played as Betterball. Played from the Mens white tees but scored according to the card for the Ladies red tees. Handicaps calculated according to format for each of the three sections .
Common belief is that the winners are the first team who can correctly work out their score...
We used to have a "Village Competition" where players would form teams based around the villages they lived in....teams of 6, usually must include 1 lady.
Play would be in three ball matches with each match being formed of players from three different teams. Winner of each match (highest st'ford score) would earn 3 points for his team, runner-up 2pts, 3rd place 1pt. Tied matches would see the points being shared..e.g. 3 way tie each player earns 2pts, top two tied, each tied player would get 2.5pts. Bottom 2 tied...1.5pts.
Bonus half points available for the highest individual stableford score, nearest the pin and other stuff.
Team with the highest combined points total would win. Ties would be settled based on the combined stableford points score of all players in a team.
Was great fun in the bar watching as the matches finished and the live scoreboard (ok a whiteboard!!) updated Eurovision style, trying to figure out who needed what to win...often went right down to the final two or three groups. Usually we had about 14 or 15 teams in total. Some of the larger villages (i.e. towns!!) might submit two or even three teams.
Team comp where each team of 5 is allowed one club, no two may have the same club. Then you play a round with each team member playing in turn from longest to shortest club, regardless of whether on tee, green, bunker. Usually teams pick a wood, a putter and 3 irons. Then they set off. You have to be careful that if the wedge player, say holes out, the putter needs to tee off at the next and the wood player goes after that. You will get people playing out of green side bunkers with a driver and people towing off on a par-5 with a wedge or putter. Strategy and shotmaking are needed.
