Luke Donald will be world no.1 if he wins the Heritage. 12 holes into round 2 he leads by 1 on the shortest course on the PGA tour I think so things are looking good.

What are people's views?
Does he have the pedigree to be No.1 and if he does get there will it instill the killer instinct that was so badly lacking when he went head to head with Tiger in the last round of the PGA a few year ago?

Is world no.1 even important? You could never win anything yet still be no.1 through consistent top 10's.

Seems to me he has matured a lot and has a great golfing brain. Great short putter and of course a sublime iron player. Seems like a decent bloke with a good sense of humour, he's not prone to wingeing like Westwood either which I like. Just gets on with it.

Hope he does it! :D

Not sure Westwood is a whinger. Anyone who comes back from 180+ without too much of a fanfare is alright in my book. Not sure if the #1 spot really has much kudos in any sport these days. It's all about winning titles and the ranking position just indicates you've been the most consistent player for a period of time.

That said Donald seems one of the tours real nice blokes and has a swing to die for so I'd be pleased to see him get there.

How good would be to sit down on Monday morning over a bowl of Frosties and ice cold milk and say these 8 little words

"I am the best golfer in the world"

I hope that Luke Donald get that chance in his life!

Watching it on the Sky on the net - Jeez I'd forgotton how many bloody ads there are. We've just had some ads, seen the 3 tee shots of Luke, Bads and WIlson at the 14th and we've gone to ads again!!

Thank the Lord I'm not paying £30+ a month for this....

Well he has finished his 2nd round and he is -10 and 2 shots ahead, two good rounds so far and he make it a 3rd good round tomorrow and then we can be talking about a new World No.1.

Come on Luuuuuuuuuke!!!

I hope he does it, he seems a really genuine guy with a [****] hot short game.
I think it's great for the game to have so many players vying for the number one slot.

Come on luke world number 1 has a kind of ring to it don't you think

and to think there was a few threads on here writting him of last year

Yeah, I thought that writing him off last year was a tad misguided.

Now he's fully recovered from his wrist injury we can see what a great player he really is. And has got stronger and fitter, plus he's bulked up a bit.

He's certainly not the shortest hitter on tour, in fact today on a par 3 187yds he took a 6 iron, whereas Mark Wilson took a 5 iron.

As for becoming number 1, I really hope so and think he can handle the pressure, remembering how he showed his mettle in the recent Matchplay event, when he had a blip on the back 9 but pulled it back together and went on to win.

An intelligent no nonsense golfer - just gets on with it and a very likeable guy.

Good luck Luke.

Its funny how Tiger was No1 for what seemed like forever but now the top spot seems to be changing hands monthly !

It just shows how dominant Tiger was during the period he was number 1. It also, shows how difficult it is to get there and stay there. Last year when all and sundry were failing to catch Tiger I thought that the way the points were worked out were wrong because it didn't make sense to have a player who had hardly played, and when he had had slapped it around the course, as world no.1.

However, watching the top spot change hands so frequently tells me that getting to no.1 requires 2 years of consistency. Staying there however requires you to be on top of your game week after week after week.

It's a testament to Tiger that he stayed there that long and that he not only stayed there, but he was so far ahead it took the rest a year to catch him.

Having said that, it's all about the Europeans at the moment an now it's Luke's turn and I hope he gets it, even if it's just for a week. I don't think any of the current crop have what it takes to stay there for any decent length of time because there is no-one that stands out like Tiger did. I also believe that Tiger will be no.1 again but not dominate like before.

Good luck Luke, a swing like that deserves top spot at least once.
