Lucy Li

At the other end of the scale..

Julie Inkster played her last US Open aged 53 and still managed to shoot the lowest score of the tournament (66) on Saturday to put herself in contention!

I spend my childhood playing football and cricket every chance i had , use to catch a bus to nets , over an hours ride both ways , it was what i enjoyed doing , looking back i should have played golf , I did have to trip out and played a few holes at The Royal Pahang GC in Kuantan in Malaysia in 1971 , its my wish to return and play it again , no children should be play as much sport as they like because they want too and not be forced by parents who want their kids to be what they wanted to be but never had the chance or the talent , in her case it seems she is happy playing golf , her interviews show that ......................EYG

I'm not sure pressure came into it - I can't imagine for one minute that her Dad or anyone else told her to win the US Open, so getting there would have just been a great holiday for a kid who gets to play the sport she's fantastic at and rub shoulders with the stars she looks up to! Pressure? How about dream come true!

If she stops playing golf tomorrow, she'll forever remember the week she spent in the USA playing golf with the best in the world!

thought she performed with credit and no problem with her playing as it is an open and she qualified by ability.

when i found out she had won her qualifier by 7 shots however, you've got to be asking questions about the rest of that qualifying field.

Loved her quote about bouncing back from the bad holes - which she did throughout both days - "If you care about your score, then the numbers get bigger and bigger and if you don't care about it, it actually helps you play better" - the wisdom/naivety of children.

Great wisdom.

When asked about hitting a triple and following it up with a birdie, she said 'we all hit triples, even Tiger hits triples, it's part of the game'.

Absolutely true!

how would it have looked to have a 11 year old child in floods of tears asking for her mummy if the pressure got to much,

She's 11 and this is golf.
We're not asking her to cure cancer and said that her town gets nuked if she doesn't succeed.

What do you recommend? Wrap all children in cotton wool and don't let them face any adverity until they are adults?

If she enjoyed herself (it looks like she definitely did) and she is able to get an education alongside her sporting achievements, I think her parents are doing a good job.

Bobby Jones starting competing in tournaments as a youngster & I'm pretty sure he played in the US Amateur Open when he was 14.
It didn't exactly do him any harm on the golf course, considering he won the first ever grand slam (and the only one where all majors were won at the same time).

He then went on to create Augusta and has gone down in folklore as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.

bit of a leap to compare this young girl to Bobby Jones,my point being what about the thousand of young girls who are hell bent on becoming sports stars, only to be manipulated and used for greed.
Will this young girl become a role model for pushy overbearing parents with pound signs in their eyes,an age limit should be set like,on a progressive scale and full membership should start at 18 to eliminate this situation, and what about the women who play the game to earn a living,as some said kids do not belong on the tour.

1. There are already limits in place.
2. If 'women who play the game to earn a living' can't compete with youngsters, then they (the women) shouldn't be on the Tour! No place for a closed shop in professional sport! Though some would like it that way!

havent read the whole thread as I've been ahem *cough* on holiday *cough*

I find it interesting she is officialy too young to play in any American Junior golf competitions but can play in the biggest 'senior' one

what are the limits,it is not about if they can beat her or not ,i dont think ANY amateur player should take the place of someone trying to make a living from any profession.

Are you being serious ?

If an Amatuer qualifies by right then he has earned his place !!

That haven't "taken" the place

I don't think this wee lassie's family are seeing pound/dollar signs in particular - her dad is a stockbroker and the family are well off from what I've read.

How is this a bit of a leap?
Bobby Jones competed against professionals when he was 14.
Lucy Li competed against professionls when she was 11.

It was merely a comparison made against all the arguments saying she was too young, she shouldn't be competing, it isn't right, it will definitely have a negative effect on her, she should wait til she is older, nothing good can come of this.

Bobby Jones is an excellent example that all the above does not always come true.

I didn't say Lucy Li was going to go on to have a career on a par with Bobby Jones.

She earnt her place on the tour, to me it doesn't matter what your status is, if you beat better players you deserve your place. I think the only issue here is making sure the girl is playing because she wants to. She is a child and that is the most important thing to remember
