Lucy Li

why do you keep mentioning Bobby Jones in your posts.
He came from a rich family and had a well paid law practice,he did not wish or need to turn pro.
How many millionaire amateurs are there trying to get into a pro tour event.
You also infer that Rose and Lowry etc would not have turned pro how do you know, look at what Rose did after the open, did he turn pro to soon.
can you tell me what is wrong in having a tiered system and working your way onto the main tour, this way they could learn the pressure in earning a living.
Do you think it good to watch an amateur hacking around with the pros because his bottle has gone i for one dont.

You sound 'awesome'

Thats no different to Pro's hacking it around

I dont think you really will ever understand the amatuer status within golf and the "FACT" - yes thats fact - these amateurs earn their right to play on any event they qualify for - what money they have behind hiim them or sponserhsip etc etc etc is irrelevant - the only thing that matters is ability.

I keep mentioning Bobby Jones because he was an amateur playing in professional events.
If you had it your way, he would never have played in a pro event and therefore no one would talk about him.
Additionally - are you suggesting that golfers only turn pro for the money and amateurs don't turn pro if they are already wealthy?

I never said that Rose and Lowry wouldn't have turned pro. What I actually said, if you read my previous post correctly, was a statement which asked whether Rose would have stuck it out as a pro. His performances were poor, he missed the cut in almost all of his events, but he had the belied he belonged on tour and could make it. My question was whether this belief came from having finished 4th in the Open as an amateur.

I didn't make any similar remarks about Shane Lowry - you are putting words in my mouth.

The following players would never have won The Open or US Open according to your theory;
Bobby Jones
Frances Ouimet
Jerome Travers
Chick Evans
Johnny Goodman
John Ball
Harold Hilton

Granted I have no idea who the last 5 are but Bobby Jones and Frances Ouimet are famous within the game. Frances Ouimet is regarded as one of the best influences on amateur golfers at the time of his US Open win. He helped to grow the game of golf outside the social elite. He came from a very poor family and wanted to get into business. But I don't see why this should matter in his decisions to remain an amateur (I only bring it up as you made a similar statement about Bobby Jones).
