A mate of mine is 80 years old, eight times club champion & plays comfortably off 12. He is a very "handsy" player & generates lots of backspin, his flight is like an upside down rainbow. I reckon his swingspeed is around 80 - 85 mph. He recently borrowed a Titleist 915, dialled down to 7° with a stiff shaft. The flight he was getting was much better, lower & better shape. However, because of the stiff shaft, he wasn't getting a lot of carry.

The question is, what club /shaft combination would be best for him? His current flight (Ping G15, reg. shaft) is OK in calm conditions but goes nowhere into the wind. Ideally, I think, he needs a senior flex, low spin shaft. Does this exist?

Answers on a postcard please.

Ping do a low spin version of their driver.

A visit to a Ping dealer would soon sort out the best shaft.
