Sorted, £13 for the week. I've paid £300+ at the airport before.
They are absolutely evil at the airport for that. I remember the first time we ever hired a car, reached the desk and they scared the life out of us. I refused to pay the upgrade, it was total theft. After that we have always organised the extra before we go.

This should be all in when you book, I'm amazed the EU have allowed it to happen.

They do love them hard sell don't they, they all must be on commission. They'll be getting none from me...apart from two booster seats.

I know you have now sorted things, but worth mentioning that if anyone hires a car for more than, say, two or three weeks in the year, then its worth looking at an annual policy. Mine cost £42 for the year - which even on its own is cheaper than what the car companies try charging.

We took out 'No Stress' car insurance when we hired in Italy recently. The additional cost was not huge, and as well as us not having to worry at all about any bumps or scratches - never mind accidents, we didn't have to refuel to return it - we just brought it back and dropped it off. A bit more expensive but in the great scheme of our 9 day holiday it was almost a negligible additional cost - and it most certainly did help on the 'stress' front.
