Local pub closed

Well said Bill,
I was going to post asking how many pubs can you go into that costs you nothing and the landlord frequently gives out money cant buy opportunities/freebies only to have some of the regulars whine about not being given free run of the place.
There are plenty of other "pubs" where you can and will be welcome to run off whatever you want to say. You get it, I get it, the majority of guys on here get it....

Really??

No free money at all. GM win, the manufacturers win with oodles of free positive advertising. It costs TM Ping whoever peanuts in the grand scale of economics to dish out some clubs.

Not arguing that they're not great opportunities just saying that your landlord won't be out of pocket like you claim.

So I used to frequent this local pub a lot, it was a great place to go, always people to talk to, debate stuff, learn new things. Even managed to buy a car cheap off someone there once.

Anyway, after a while the atmosphere started to change, the bar staff kept getting attitude from some of the regulars, so they had to employ door staff. Then after a while, the door staff started getting attitude too, so they had to get a bit heavier handed by dishing out short term barrings, some people then even got barred for life, but that's life, people in life come and go, and if they can't get along and play nicely they didn't deserve to be in there. It had started to become a bit of a lottery as to what the atmosphere was going to be like, some days it was great, but other times it was just full of people moaning about anything from the decor to the attitude of the door staff to the cost of a pint. Yeh sure, some people moaned to the bar staff about some of the punters, but common sense prevailed for a while as everyone was an adult about things,

Anyway (part 2) the owners of the pub started to think deep down, is this grief worth all the hassle? Yeh it's sometimes a great place to be and most of the time everyone gets on great and we all have a great time, but it became too much. Life was too short for the owner whom had vested interests, so he decided to call it a day. To him, it was not the end of the world, but to the regulars whom had always got along and grew to love the place, it was a real shame.

Moral of the story? Pubs shut down if you don't respect the owners, the pub rules and the other customers, make their life difficult and the fun will disappear and it will become too much of a pain in the you know what to continue, so they will close their doors for good.
I'm going to guess that you have only just started going to this pub and were not there when its was the best pub around. I'm uessing it had a great Atmosphere and all the locals got on like a house on fire. I’m sure there was lively debate and lots of outside activity like teams arranged to play other pubs and pub games arranged at lots of other pubs that were well attended.

Over the last few years at lot of the customers started to drift away due to the attitude of some of the new punters and the banter just dried up to be replaced with very sterile conversations.

A lot of the newer customers appeared to just be after freebies all the time as well, I Imagine.

My first reply to this thread!

No i have been frequenting the pub for a number of years, yes new punters come in every now and again and cause a scene, but thats life, that happens in all pubs. My real feeling is a lot of the "old school" regulars forgot where they were and started to relax a little too much.. let us not forget, this pub is a public place by definition of its name and what goes on in there gets recorded and streamed around the world on the internet so you can have people "virtually" visit the pub from Hawaii to Hong Kong..

Yes, i am one of the lucky few that won a trip to a brewery and won some top quality free beer and food! but thats not why i started going to the pub, nor why i stayed.

Maybe some of the older more established punters should have set the standards and been a bit softer on the new clients, yes they have heard the same statement or heard the same question maybe 1000 times, but the new punter does not know that...

I think a number of responses have summed up thoughts of the majority.

Cheers!

Good lunches are the way to go, lots of profit in food.

Paddy, I remember when your pub only had around 50 regulars and the only freebie on offer was a meet at someone's local, unfortunately it appears to have been taken over by one of them Whetherspoon type pubs and is mobbed with all the wrong sort of clientele.

I hardly ever go to my local pub anymore cause its full of a load of plonkers with their heads up their own jacksies and who have very little to say of interest to me anyway. I will only pop in for a few to see a match or catch up with some mates who are barred from my new local. My new local on the other hand is a craicing wee spot and some of the regulars are well dishy. Although the owner/manager is a big fat smelly baldy git...

The pub's apparently a little quieter now, but there's at least some feeling that that's a good thing.
Several patrons had been quite amused to watch some of the the old 'gang' sneak past the doormen, some only for a while, using disguises.
The Door Staff, locals themselves, are now back to using it as their pub rather than mainly working on the door all the time.
The old pub is still flourishing, seemingly unaffected by the new one. The new one is much smaller and seems to cater just to the old 'gang', so more a Social Club really.

Please can everybody refrain from posts that are there to just flame the other users. Mike has already posted pretty clear guidelines on this subject. It is getting to the stage where warnings are no longer appropriate.

Thanks

What, like this one?

I have a couple of decent local pubs. Both are great places to visit for different reasons. One is great for watching a match with the lads with a few beers. The other is a good real ale pub that does great food. Different strokes for different folks.

Did you mean this in reply to me or was that an accident? I'm flaming nobody.... and the pub I refer to is a real pub in Edinburgh! 'twas a joke!

I would have quoted you if it was in relation to anything you had posted ;)

It was more of a general announcement.
