Links tips appreciated!

Playing downwind the ball won't climb to it's full height so the shot will always be a little bit lower. I would normally aim to land the ball short of the green and let it run on or maybe carry onto the green if the flag is at the back.

When are you coming over to Saunton?

We will arrive UK thursday april 16 th and hope we can tee off on friday 17th at east or west... we will stay until may 4th this time and have also booked 3 weeks in sep..

we are really looking forward to this season and the visits to UK....by the way...on friday will our 18 hole course open,,,its very early for this time of year

Even if one choose 1,2,or 3 clubs less and go for a full shot....is it better to have the same trajectory and height for the ball,, or should one try to keep the ball low....

Apart from Drives, I stopped trying to 'adapt' my shots for the wind, as it just destroyed my rhythm - and every round was different! So, as D4S states, just altered the club and landing point and hit a 'normal' shot. Hitting low or high Drives is much easier to do.

Crosswinds are the worst though. I've hit an absolute peach 20 yards into the junk in a severe cross wind only to watch it stay rocket straight, then watched the same breeze take another peach 50 yards offline - into the junk of course - 2 holes later!

frustrating when it happens and its random how the trajectory will be,,,,afterwards, one can think...this is the nature of golf in its true elements......

Couple of tips:-
3 wood straight every time as said above, a driver can put you in some real deep poop.
dont worry about taking a putter 40 yards off the green, it's normal on a links.
its always windy, get used to it.
keep your normal rhythm until you get used to the course, then learn to adapt.
make sure you have wooden tees, sounds stupid but you try plastic ones in the summer (lol).
oh and in the summer when you (try) to take your first deep divot, enjoy the pain lol.

but the most important, enjoy it. It's a great test of the game ;-)

Forget what yardages you get with your irons, yardages are just a guide on a links course. It's more about feel and imagination when playing links golf.

I've had chance to play a few rounds now and get used to it - I'm getting used to it bit by bit. had 34 points yesterday off the whites so it's coming. Didn't take my driver out of the bag and starting to get the feel of playing mid iron approach shots short and trying to run them on.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed it as much - it's different every time.

Our "tactic" is to leave the scorecard in the clubhouse and only try to enjoy the course and surrondings, the reason is to " minimize" frustration. Have playing links intensivly for more then a week now, made some birdies and pairs and load of bogeys, but also lost at least a couple of holes during each round. Its difficult sometimes to roll in towards green because of undulating fairways and greens, difficult to know where the ballwill roll and stop. To lift it in can also be difficult due to wind. Its not easy on links, one need to play with patience, respect and be playing with brain and not only bang on the ball each stroke. Time for an early lunch now and then off for a round on Saunton East this lovely day..enjoy

I love hitting a low bump and run or putt from a long way out on an undulating links fairway - it rewards imagination
