Links golf is just soooooo dull

links golf is the way the game should be played, far more interesting than a bomb and gouge target course, have alwys enjoyed any links course i have played.

Anyone but Tiger to win.

ive never played murifield but to me it looks quite flat. there doesn't seem to be many changes in elevation. there are no tee boxes cut into big dunes.

one of the best ive played was portsteward in n.ireland. amazing big dunes with the holes weaving in and out of them. it wouldn't really lend to galleries but its a lot better to look at that murifield.

As pure design of golf holes it is the best in the world IMO.

The comment was that the TV does not do it justice is double edged.
You need low level camera shots to be able to appreciate the course but when you play it you do not get the scenic views that the high cameras give you.

but .....who plays a championship course for the views?

Links golf may be fun to play but it's as boring as anything to watch, I've had to switch to the cricket!

I can't bring myself to watch the cricket, equally as boring. I have the golf on Sky+ and am currently running about 30mins behind - I just skip thru it on fast forward to watch Tiger's shots then wait another 30mins and repeat.

I was a member of a coastal course on hilltops for the best part of 3yrs, it was a bland goat track, windswept and open just like what we're watching on tele right now.

Great pics from GaryinDerry above, now that WOULD make for interesting viewing!! That course looks spectacular

Muirfield is not the greatest of courses, really is quite flat and featureless. The pictures posted above by garyinderry are what links golf is all about. Dramatic dunes and sea views make for a much more interesting course. Take the bunkers out of Muirfield and you are left with a flat, boring course.

Here is a proper links course

Didn't see this text in GM's description of their No. 1 course. :p ;)

No 1 in the world, since when did it overtake Pine Valley? :ears:

Anyway, I know a couple of GM course reviewers, they are knobs ;)

Really can't get into the Open this year. Sure some of that is due to the BBC coverage but the course isn't doing it for me. No feature holes like other links venues and conditions have made players far more defensive and I am not enjoying watching players hit irons off 99% of the tees

If I may respectfully disagree, I think it's great. I shudder to think how tight the course must be if the pro's are reduced to hitting irons to make sure they hit the fairway. The best part of it is that it shows amateurs how to play golf, rather than just standing there bashing your driver. The number of amateurs who think you have to hit driver every hole they can is in part due to the pros doing just that. This way it shows that playing golf is not about hitting the driver, it's about hitting the fairway.

Can't get over the number of people who don't get 'proper' golf on a superb golf course. As for hitting irons off the tee, the players are trying to put the ball in the correct position for the next shot. If the course was playing soft and long of course they would be hitting driver more. Elements are dictating how they are playing it which is the case with links golf.

I'm sure a lot of people who are complaining about lack of definition, flatness and crap views play on what in comparison is a 'goat track'.

Shaping up to be a tremendous last day and the winner is going to be a quality champion.

What a pile! The pros hit their irons further than most amateurs could expect to hit their driver.

Not really I think it's a valid point, the pros tees are 70 yards a hole further back so it's all relative. You don't have to hit driver on every hole. The only issue re the comparison I see is the pros ability to hit long irons vs ours.

Keep the ball in play, put it in the right spot. We could all learn from that:whistle:

I get why the pros are hitting irons but for 18 holes it becomes boring. The driver should be encouraged at some point but the penalty is too severe here. With the run these irons are going further than even forum members hit the big dog. I just don't like the lack of variety or options off the tee
