Links golf is just soooooo dull

Burnham is much more interesting with a lot more elevation changes. Only thing letting it down is the stretch from the 2nd shot on 10th through to tee shot on 12th, no weaknesses apart from that little stretch.

Its quite bizzare how perceptions vary. Burnham more interesting, yes. More elevation changes, no.

Lots of sense posted here but a helluva lot of nonsense also. There is one thing about links golf, the more you play it, the more you understand it and if you begin to appreciate it then the chances are a love for it follows.

I would suggest those who don't like it have probably played a handful of rounds at most.

And the most hilarious post about Muirfield being flat and boring  again written by someone who has neither visited or played it. Muirfield is not flat and has more character than the TV can show.

Is the right answer...............

muirfield is indefensibly flat. it has been stated many times, that it is arguably boring to look at due to its lack of big dunes and spectacular views that other links courses enjoy. this was backed up by many reviews and also people on here watching on t.v.

.

There's a difference between being "flat" and not having big dunes (like Birkdale, RCD etc). It is not up hill and down dale but it certainly isn't flat. I was there on Sunday and there are many more natural vantage points due to the lay of the land than Lytham and St Andrews for example which are both much, much "flatter" than Muirfield.

Links golf is the best. So players are using irons off of the tee....since when did it become the law that driver must be used on every par 4/5? At least there is some variation and thought required.

val you have got the wrong end of the stick on this one.

this does not make it a bad golf course. many pros state they love the course due to the layout. every hole keeps you guessing in the wind. this is very good course design. its many well placed bunkers provide much food for thought.

this years open gave us great enjoyment and a worthy winner. im not taking too much away from the course but it is not without its faults imo.

Trouble is mate 90% of the people spouting the crap have never actually played/walked the course. You can take anybody watching on TV's view of the course with a pinch of salt as almost every course looks flat on tv.

Augusta looks flat on tv but it aint.

..and as far as links golf being dull - I challenge anybody to play Cruden Bay and tell me that it was dull. Au contraire - many if not most will find playing Cruden Bay the most fun they've had on a golf course - ever - anywhere.

OK time to man up [or woman up]

Please let the boards know if you have been critical of Muirfield AND have actually played it. [Computer games do not count!!]

Somehow I don't think there will be too many.

Best bit of fun I ever had on a golf course was behind the trolly sheds at Clevedon :)

I think there's at least one forummer who was! ;)

Not me though, best course I've ever played. Certainly not flat; I haven't read the whole thread but where did that idea come from?

Just a shame I had to sport a false beard for the day.......

Those calling Muirfield flat are clueless. It is a great golf course with rises and falls, dips and hollows especially from holes 3 to 17.

Go to next years venue....now that is what you call flat, unbelievably flat.

Where in heavens name did you get that idea from. Because it's totally wrong!

It may not actually have many big dunes on it (though 3, 13 and 17 certainly seem to be 'amongst' dunes) but tha'ts not what all links courses are about. There are certainly plenty of elevation changes. Try walking from the 3rd green to the 4th tee (or green) carrying a heavy bag! Or over and down 6, then upt to the 7th tee and green, then down 8. Or up 11 and down 12 then up 13 and down 14!

It's certainly got more elevation changes than St Andrews or Carnoustie (where the only 'big Dune' there - on the 5th - is man-made) and probably more than Royal Birkdale. Does that make them 'boring flat' courses too? Royal St Georges isn't all that hilly either! And Bomber's Leven seems pretty flat from memory.

Perhaps you just have a local concept of what a links course 'should' be. That strikes me as somewhat 'narrow minded'!

hmmm - were the trolley sheds besides the greenkeepers complex as you drove into Clevedon. Played there loads of times and really enjoyed it - then they changed it. Hell of a first hole with a gale blowing off the Bristol Channel.
