Yesterday we had a very emotive thread about being invited to play through when held up.
Two different senario's.
1. A major competition. A lost ball, rule of thumb 5 min to search? Next group close behind, by the time you decide to call them through, and they have done so, the group behind them is waiting.
It probably take 10 to 15min to let a four ball pass, and in the event it causes chaos, I have to say that I don't have an answer to that one.
2. Playing in general play. I think the best way here is to as near as possible let people play through on a tee, par three is best, then all walk up and the group going through plays on,this save time and hold ups.
I will be interested to see the Forager's veiws On this.

The book says somewhere that when you arrive in the area where you think your ball is and it becomes apparent it will take some finding, if the group behind are waiting you should call them through immediately, not after you've hunted for 5 mins.

Ten to 15 minutes to let a group through?

Was about to say the same. If the group I'm in gets called through, I feel it's only courteous to play the rest of that hole as quickly as possible and to try and fill the 'gap' ahead of you on the course.

In scenario A, it's not a case of waiting 5 mins to call the group behind through. If your ball is in trouble, you have 5 mins to find it once you are in the area it may have landed. If you're having trouble finding it and the group behind is waiting on the tee, then by all means call them through at the earliest opportunity not after 5 mins when your ball is officially 'lost'.

See Bob got in there first while I was typing :)

You know that, I know that, but how many times do you see it happen.

May I point out that I did say (rule of thumb, which is embeded in the brain of most players) Also if you think you may not be able to find said ball you should play a provisional ball, but that's not the real world !!!

As soon as it becomes apparent that there is going to be a hold up due to lost ball or whatever I wave people through to prevent any backlog. What is really ironic is when then group you are waving through smacks it into the same area of cabbage which you are searching:smirk:
