Biggest mistake of my golfing life... but also a big lesson learnt!

Could have had so many titles for this thread, like "how much of a t*t was I" etc etc etc.

The story of my 2nd round of the club singles knockout was one of never giving up hope, it could be a movie if it was not for the stupidity of the ending.

Thanks to my opponent (off 8) getting 3 consecutive birdies I was 5 down after 9. I then proceeded to play the next 8 holes in two over gross to stand on 18 all square! Some comeback huh? I even lost a hole, the 13th with my only dropped shots!

So what did I do? I rifled a monster drive down 18 but it went too long, into the rough. Could I find it, flip no!

Dammit, back to the tee, I will give it shot, clear the OOB (driving range) and go for the green in two. I hit a real hooking shot, no chance I thought. "I have hooked it OOB, I think we should call it the match and go in for a drink" He picked up.

As we walked in he noticed a ball near the OOB, about 140 yards from the green, fat chance its mine, thats a good 300+ yard drive over the OOB.

I went to pick it up and it was my 3 off the tee ball... IN BOUNDS!! If I could have got down in 3 from there I might have had a shot at halving the hole! He was middle of the fairway and had to mess up two shots to do it but it might have been possible.

Lesson guys, even if you think all hope is lost do not give up! If you do, at least go retrieve the ball as it might not be OOB afterall!

I worked so hard, played faultlessly for 8 holes and threw it away by:

1) taking too much club off the tee (new swing is working too well, cost me about 3 shots that day!)

2)Assuming my ball was OOB, could even have played 5 off the tee if I had thought about it. Then he would have played out and I would have found original ball and maybe had a shot to go to extra holes.

I know anything could have happened and I should be proud I took the senior club champ to the 18th and had him rattled but I tainted it with such stupidity.

I hope from this no one else makes the mistake I did today

:(

That is hard cheese indeed. Unlucky. But if you look at all the best sportsmen throughout history one thing always rings true- they never know they're beat til they're beat, no matter how hopeless the situation seems.

You have the consolation of experience now at least.

Great comeback though on a positive note, you can take that forward with you.

unlucky mate, sounds like you had a pretty awesome round - atleast you have a lot of positives to take out of it, like being able to come back from being 5 down after 9, you must have played some pretty good golf!

we learn from all the mistakes we make, that is life - chin up and have a beer :)

Like you say, lesson learnt and hopefully you'll never do it again.

If you're going to concede anyway, you could have looked for your ball and if it's OOB or lost THEN you concede, but if you find it happy days.

Good performance though, you can be very proud of that.
